Economic Growth Is Continuing Favorably Chamber Says Economic growth is con tinuing favorably despite the sluggish national eco nomy. according to new and expanded business fi gures released by the Greater Charlotte Cham ber of Commerce. Employment figures (new jobs) have nearly doubled those of 1981 through the third quarter of the year. A total of 202 firms have announced either new or expanded fa cilities for the first nine months of the year, down by ten percent from a year ago and only slightly below the five year average of 216 firms. The 202 firms will invest $295 million in facilities totaling 4.6 million square feet and create 4,299 jobs. Among the major an nouncements during the third quarter were the fol lowing: the W.B. John W. Hechinger, Pre sident, and Richard En gland, Chairman, indicated the company will open two stores of 60,000 square feet with an additional 20,000 square foot outdoor gar den shop. One unit will be located at the intersection of In dependence Blvd. and Rama Road, east of Char lotte. The other will be located at the corner of Pineville and Woodlawn Roads, southwest of uptown Char lotte. Founded in 1911, Hech inger Company is one ot tne largest do-it-yourself home improvement centers in the mid-Atlantic region and caters exclusively to the amateur do-it-yourselfer; in the care and repair of his or her home and garden. The company has con tinued to buck the current economic trend uhich has dampened the performanc es of most retailers. They currently are enjoying record sales and earnings for the second quarter of their current fiscal year. Two hundred permanent jobs will be created by the expansion. A typical Hechinger home center is 60,000 square feet under roof and stocks over 40,000 different items from fastenings to insulation, framing mate rial, sheathing, plumbing, and electrical supplies, windows, housewares, un finished furniture, lamps, hardware, paint and hand tools.
