Mrs. Kitchen Possesses Special Gifts My leresa Simmons Post Managing Editor Everyone at the con valescent home felt that that one elderly lady could or would not speak to anyone. She semed to be an empty shell. until Dorothy C. Kitchen touched her. A nursing assistant now at the Pro vidence Convalescent Rest dence, Mrs Kitchen pos sesses special gifts and ta lents from God A special touch, and a pure smile of caring seemed to bring that spe cial elderly lady to the sur face and she said, “Mrs Kitchen why don’t you give the other girls your talent?” “I call it the gift of the Holy Spirit,” Mrs Kitchen announced. Mrs. Kitchen has worked at the Provi dence Convalescent Resi dence for eight years She was recently awarded a special service pin for her devoted work. “I get a joy out of my work. I enjoy patients and 1 try to communicate with my patients. I get a joy out of helping people," she pro fessed. “I believe the Lord led me to the nursing home When I was a teenager I helped my mother, Flossie Caudle Cathey, my sister, Joyce Cathey Hudson and my brother, French Cathey, take care of my grandparents. From there I felt this was my call ing...that God has given me a gift and a talent.” Mrs. Kitchen’s mother owned and operated a - beauty shop. Both Mrs Kitchen and her sister, Joyce, received their diplo mas in cosmetology but both also received training to become nurses’ assist ants in nursing centers. Mrs. Kitchen for instance took her training at the Woods-Morgan’s Beauty and Barber College. She took classes at the Red Cross Nursing Class in high school and further trained as a nurses’ assistant at Presbyterian Hospital. She has also worked and trained in the St. Raphaels Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. ■—— Dorothy Kitchen Awarded pin During those earlier years, Mrs. Kitchen worked at the hospital during the day and studied cosmetology at night. Even though she could make an outstanding living in cos metology her work at the convalescent residence is much more important to her. Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Caudle of Union County are the grandparents of Mrs Kitchen. They have passed away now and so has her mother, Flossie. The me mory of her mother, sister and brother caring for her grands have become a cherished memory of Mrs. Kitchen’s. Mrs. Kitchen also has several half brothers and sisters. William Cathey of Springfield Garden, N.Y.; Ranson Cathey of Philadel phia, PA; Rev. Ramond Cathey, Philadelphia, PA; Arthur Cathey of Char lotte; Albirthus Cathey and Price Cathey Jr., also of Charlotte; JoAnna Cathey Moss of Washington, D.C.; and Linda Cathey of Phil adelphia. Brenda Berry is Mrs. Kitchen’s offspring. “I have tried to teach my beautiful daughter what my mother taught me... love.” “I love my family and community,” Mrs. Kitchen continued. “Socially I would like for everyone to be bom again (scripture St. John 3:3). That would eliminate crime, inis would be my preference of change in this world." Mrs. Kitchen is a strong believer in prayer and loves to listen to spiritual music. She also enjoys reading the Bible. She attends Mt. Carmel Baptist Church where Rev Leon C. Riddick is pastor. She par ticipated in the Health Fair at the church sponsored by the Nurses Guild of the church She is also a mem ber of the Sunday School Department and partici pates in the Missionary De partment. Being one to refuse to think negatively, Mrs. Kit chen is known for the smile she keeps on her face She is also known for the sun shine and love she emits everyday. Williams Cen ter which is located at 3333 Wilkinson Blvd., is open to anyone in the Charlotte Mecklenburg area, but for those seeking financial aid one must be a resident of Charlotte. Also to qualify for aid proof of income and the number of children must be submitted to the center by ---- - - -- • Other services provided by the center are: immuni zation for children, pre natal care, management of chronic diseases, physical examinations, hyperten sion, heart disease, dia betes, family planning, the common cold and flu, and some preventive dental care.
