SINGER ROBERT WINTERS
Confined to a wheelchair
Winters Achieves Inspite_
Of Physical Hindrances
By Loretta Manago
Poet Staff Writer
From misfortune,
growth, courage and
determination often times
spring forth.
Entertainers like Ray
Charles, Stevie Wonder
and Ronnie Milsap despite
their handicap, and pro
bably because of their phy
sical limitations have given
the world mask so sensi
tively creative that had
they not been impaired in
some manner, the world
may have otherwise been
deprived.
Add entertainer Robert
Winters of Robert Winters
and Fall to the list of those
who achieve in spite of a
major physical hindrance.
Confined to a wheelchair
since age five Robert
Witters has overlooked his
personal difficulty and has
risen to a status where he
sefvis as an IhspBVBbh to
those who cry, "I can’t.”
Winters’ total existence
roars “I must.”
He began singing at the
urgence of his sisters. Com
munity church groups were
among the first type of
experience Winters gained
in music. Later as music
became more a part of his
life he sang with a local
accapella group in clubs,
canteens, talent shows and
anywhere else they could
find a stage.
A move to California in
1973 was a year of diversity
for Winters. Although he
continued to sing in church
es he began singing main
stream pop and RAB music
as well.
Surpassing the stage of
being a vocalist at incred
ible range and versatility
Winters is also an accom
plished songwriter and a
talented multi-instrument
alist playing among other
instruments, keyboard,
guitars and bass.
While in the process of
trying to get his own music
recorded Winters expand
ed his experience by play

ers as Stevie Wonder,
Larry Graheih and having

Meeting Walter Turner,
background singer''' and
chief inspiration behind
Winters’ group Fall proved
to be the turning point in
Winters’ professional
career. Through Turner
Whites met Jipimy Bee of
Bee-Alexander Produc
tions and the eventual
result was the chart
topping single and album
“Magic Man.”
Steadily and consistently
making his mark in the
field of entertainment,
Winters was the subject of
an award-winning TV do
cumentary, "Introducing
Robert Winters,” named a
winner in the music cate

Runaway Girl
Brooke Shields is a run
away girl who hides out in
the trunk of George Bums’
car, teaching the old rogue
some new tricks as he helps
her escape from an angry
dope dealer, and she helps
him grow younger every
minute, in “Just You and
Me, Kid,’’ a television pre
miere on “The ABC Mon
day Night Movie,” January
10 at 9 p.m. on WSOC
TV, Channel 9.
George Bums is Bill, a
retired vaudevillian who
wakes each morning to the
sound of taped applause.
One morning he also
awakes to the sight of a
scared teenager hiding in
his antique car, wearing
nothing but a smile and an
inner tube.
Maybe, he decides, life
does begin at 80. It cer
tainly doesn’t begin to get
boring.
The girl is Kate, and
she’s on the run from foster
parents who don’t want her
and a drug dealer who
wants her very much - she
has beaten him for $20,000
The drug dealer doesn’t
care that he got the money
illegally himself. He wants
it back. Now. With, per

a paperweight.
