! By Bill Johnson IHKVI _kuv Bill Johnson TELLING IT LIKE IT REALLY IS.,. . .Progress doesn’t flow from excuses! The CIAA is getting into the act of over-saturating the market with basketball. Bob Moorman’s outfit has scheduled six Contests for opening-day for their 38th annual uribble Derby at the Norfolk'Scope, _ February 23. - --1-—-- - "■One would think that’s a bit too much court action even for the most die-hard cage fans. m The tournament will tip-off at 9 a.m., ▼February 23, and it will end somewhere fire nd 11 p.m.' Weary-eyed enthusiasts would have seen six teams'dropped by the wayside and a like number advance to the quartCr-finals during the approximately eight hours and 20 minute span. The session will return to a more saner schedule on Thursday, with only four games on tap. The semis are slated for Friday night and the Championship finals will be held Saturday. Early indications are that Bob’s tourna ment committee is considering housing the Women’s Championship Contest as the opener of Saturday’s twinbill. Betcha_you didn’t know that nothing is ever accomplished tomorrow? I agree with Barry Cooper, the noted columnist who says that Black schools made a mistake when they optioned to move up to NCAA Division I. Until these schools can find a way to raise more money for thir prograhns, they’re going to find the odds heavily against them when they compete with the major, predominantly white colleges who operate their athletic programs with' what appears to be an unlimited purse string. Only four players have rushed for more '"than 10,000 yards during their NFL career. They were Jim Brown, O. J.'Simpson, Franco Harris andWalter Payton, all Black men. P Wonder why the WBA is going to the trouble of ordering a rematch between heavyweight Champion Michael Dokes and former title-holder Mike Weaver? How about a found of hearty applause for coach Bob Moore who is doing one helleva w job coaching basketball at Johnson C. Smith in what is generally Considered as a “rebuilding season.” Don’t' be too surprised if the Chicago White Sox peddle outfielder Ron LeFlore to another club .'They reportedly ard willing to pay $500,000 of thecontroversial outfielder’s $750,000 Annual salary to any takers. Recent statistics from the baseball com missioner’s office list Reggie Jackson with more RBIs in the last 10 years than any other baseball player in the big leagues. The California Angels' outfielders have driven in 1,010 nuts since the 1973 season. Although the New York Jets are making a believer out of me with each appearance, I am going to stay with my beloved Dallas - Cowboys as the team to beat' in the Upcoming Super Bowl. They will win it all! Tony Dorsett lias moved ahead of Earl Campbell in career rushing. The famed Dallas Cowboy is now in 10th place among all-time NFL runners. Wonder How many basketball coaches wish the shot docks Were abolished. Wash ington State coach' George Raverieling reports, “We’re going to tinker with the product (game) until it’s unhealthy.” Take a look at the possible confusion the shot dock and the three point scoring play could evolve. Imagine turning to your ■; television set to~ watch the SEC play with ^heir 45-second shot dock, then on the next night an ACC game comes to the tube with a ;] 30-second dock and theta: 19-foot three point scoring range. The third night could find < you watching a Big 10 Contest with a 22-foot :: arc and no shot dock. Statistics support the belief that Calvin : Peete belongs In tbe company of tbe Super Stars. In addition to earning $318,470 on tbe PGA Tour'fn 1982, Peete finished fourth In total earnings, second in average scoring per round, and wa£ the leader in the accuracy range. His 1982 success moved him up to $703,860 In total career earning*. He likely will become the second Black to Win more than a million dollars 6n the tour during his career. Lee Elder was the first - Black man to reach this Idfty plateau. ‘ Jack Nickiaus Won only on* tour victory a * yedr ago. However, he needs to win a mere $7,929 this season to, become the first pro ' golfer to earn $4 million during a career. If you feel the Golden BUils aren’t for real, a Closer look at the team’s stats sheet will change your mind. Bob Moore’s herd la having modest sudees* with their aims from the field, hitting 47.1 percent; they’re out rebounding the opposition by six cafoms per game, and four of Bob’* regulars are Shooting in double figures. Roosevelt Me Gruder la the leader with an 18.6 Scoring Kerry McDonald ...Effective relDounder McDonald h Fotrnidable Force In Trojans’ Attack By James Cuthbertson Post Staff Writer The Olympic Trojans realized what a formidable force Kerry McDonald could be in a game against the North Mecklenburg Vikings. In a big upset, McDon ald hit eight of 10 field goals, two of two free throws, pulled down 12 re bounds and shot 80 percent from the field in leading the Trojans past the Vikings. His previous high was 24 in a 70-62 win over Garin ger in the Myers Park Christmas Tournament. The son of Mrs. Carolyn Bradshaw is this week’s Charlotte Post Basketball Player of the Week. He is 6’3", 170-pounds and sports number-WTon the basket ball court -“I shot well in the North game,” he said. “On de fense I did the job that was needed. On the boards I was in the right place at the right time and the ball just seemed to come into my hands.” Shy McDonald is a little modest. The ball didn’t ex actly fall into his hands. With a great vertical leap he dominated the boards with his long outstretched arms tormenting the Vikings who were limited to one shot.__ Coming off a disastrous loss to Myers Park, he attributed the team’s or ganization and desire as the reason for the upset. “We are close to being as good as we were last year,” he said. “We are just lack ing in experience. ' Last year the Trojans advanced to the quarter finals of the state playoffs before losing to Chapel Hill High School, a finalist in the 4A division. His most exciting mo ment in basketball? "Getting named to the All Tournament team at Myers Park has been my most exciting moment,” he revealed. ‘‘Nothing like this has ever happened to me before." Ralph Sampson is the most exciting player that he likes to watch. “I like to model myself after him,”. McDonald said. “He motivates me and he is very exciting to watch.”-' Runner’s (ini* Kay Overcash previous winner of the Charlotte Ob server Marathon and other prestigious races, and Dr. David Gardner, fitness director for the Charlotte Fire Department, are among the “technicians” who will lead a two-week cliHic at the Trade Street YWCA, beginning January 24, 12:15 p.m. Runners are welcome at any or all sessions, Mon day, Wednesday, Friday through February 4 for discussions on nutrition, injuries, training hints, and actual running workouts.
