Auditorium-Coliseum Civic Center Authority - Hope tor An Age Of Anxiety Some people are saying that the idealism of the 60s is dead. I don’t believe it. What has changed is how young people are respond ing to a troubled world which appears to offer little hope for the future. In "The Sounds of Si lence,” Simon and Gar funkle, pop minstrels of the 60b, sang: “The words of . the prophets are written on the subway walls and tene ment halls.” Today, the mood of the times is ap pearing more often as gra ft tti on the walls of our colleges and universities. On a wall at Princeton University, someone wrote: "This life is a test. It is only a test. Had this been an actual life, you would have received fur ther instruction as to what to do and where to do.” At another school, these words: "Sometimes I think we are alone. Sometimes I think we are not. Either way the thought is stag gering.” Fifteen years ago, many kids grew long hair, pro tested against Vietnam and dropped out of society and into drugs. Today, more and more are taking the ultimate “out” by taking their own lives. There is hope for the young and searching. I want them to find it. Jjjf You Get ]4 Ticket! Drive Carefully, Or Dig Deeper m Your Pockets Special To The Pwt \ Traffic tickets already \ dig deeply into motorists’ ' pockets, but after April 1. they will dig even deeper - about eight percent deeper. The fine will not cost more, but the insurance bill ill will rise for anyone with a ticket who renews his or her policy after April 1. The difference between a bill before a ticket and the same bill after a ticket can be dramatic, says Bernard H. Parker, chairman of the North Carolina Reinsur ance Facility Board of Governors. “And the sur charge costs you for three policy years. For example if you renew your auto liability policy in Charlotte after April 1, with no tickets it might cost you $151 a year for the mini mum amount of coverage required by law. At renew al time if you have one point under the Safe Driver Insurance Plan (SDIP) for traveling 45 in a 35-mile F an-house zone or some > other infraction, your $151 bill will rise to $195 - a 29 percent increase.” Two SDIP points, which * you receive for a convic r tion of speeding over 55 ' miles an hour but less than ‘ 75, are more than twice as * bad as on* point. It would increase the $151 bill to at ' least $245 - a 62 percent i increase. 5 Ten points, which you can receive on a convic 1 tion for driving while under * the influence of intoxi y cants, will increase the bill r from $152 to at least $748 - 395 percent increase. “Ac tually, the effect of a L)UI conviction probably would be a 601 percent increase if I laced in facility, d be up impany. 40 to 44 lan the ind the >p of the Parker fer only nee and ount of by law. SDIP point* also affect your bill for collision and comprehensive insurance lot quite as much only one type of e applies to those coverages. Two types of surcharges apply to the liability cover ages for those drivers who have SDIP points. The first type of surcharge has been required by law for many years. Unger the law, a Safe Driver Insurance Plan is required, and under it at-fault accidents and con victions for traffic offenses are assigned point values. Each is assigned a per centage surcharge to be appjied to the base rate for all coverages. Currently the SDEP sys tem ranges from one point, which carries a 10 percent surcharge, up through 12 points which carry a 450 percent surcharge. Twelve-point violations in duce: manslaughter or ne gligent homicide, prear ranged highway racing, ancfhit and run invoicing bodily injury or death. getting one or mere SDIP points also brings the secend type - recoupment surcharges. Actually there areftwo types of recoup meat surcharges which to gether make up the 18.7 peitent total. One sur chirge is to recover the 'operating losses of the fa dlify. The other makes up thetdifference between the “clean risk" rate which the companies are required to use for “clean risks” put in the facility and the facility Read The Charlotte Post I 831A New Yorker I Colt 2 dii Plymouth RoHant 2 dr. •160” ~ SSBL.
