That is only one sample of what reviewers say about Joy Simpson after hearing her sing. During the Leighton Ford Crusade, April 10-17, the opportunity to see and to hear soprano Joy Simp son will be available to those attending the cru sade. Miss Simpson will make a guest appearance at the crusade on Sunday, - April 10. The roots of her exten sive training and experi ence began formally with Dorothy DiScala at the Academy of Vocal Arte in Philadelphia. On a full scholarship to Temple Uni versity Miss Simpson stu died with Robert Page and George McKinley. From there she studied with Mme. Marian Freschl at the Juilliard School of , ' \ ’ A transcendental artist ■yy. Although opera is the focal point of Miss Simp son’s career, she also stresses the mphuh sa cred music has in her life. She is in constant deemed for performances at reli gious conferences end con ventions. In other avenues Miss Simpson is a success ful choral conductor, an accomplished pianist and an accredited teacher at Black Studies. In 1978 Mias Simpson won the coveted Naumburg Foundation 50th Anniver sary Vocal Competition. Since that time she has been guest soloist with the National Baltimore and Pittsburgh Symphonies as weO as the Minnesota Or chestra. She has toured ex tensively throughout North America, England, India and. the Soviet Union. The recognition that Ae is receiving through the Martha B. Rockefeller Fund for Music, The Will iam Still van Foundation and ethers, is only further proof to her credibility as a dynamic artist. JCSU To Hold Special Conference For Women A special conference for women will be beM on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University from April io-U The conference, "In novations for Women," k sponsored by JCSU’s Offic with the National Urban League’s Black Executive Exchange Program (BEEP). The theme for the conference is “Black Wo men of the 80’s ” Although men still hold moot at the better Jobe in industries, women are making considerable pro gress, said Dr. William Greene, director of Career Counseling and Placement at JCSU. Because many students are not aware of the ex tent women are actively involved in important cor porate and government functions, Greene said, the conference will seek to ex pose students to women who have moved into pro f ess tonal and managerial levels and can ghre stu dents special insight and sensitivity. BEEP consultants will help students gain a fresh, practical and (actual out look on opportunities for women in the job market by sharing perspectives The Vahkhinp Tribe Story Of Blacks Who Beat Slavery If only about 20 percent of the African slaves reached the United States,, the natural question is where did the other 80 per cent go? According to Allen Counter and David Evans, two black scientists from Harvard University who have traveled deep into the South American jungle for almost a decade, the en slaved Africans were taken primarily to South Ame rica, Central America and the Caribbean. On the upcoming edition of “Tony Brown’s Journ al,” the television series carries the viewer deep into unknown jungles of Surinam in an investiga tion of “The Vanishing Tribe.” “Tony Brown’s Journal” is the nation’s longest run ning Black-Affairs series and has been sponsored by Pepsi-Cola Company for seven consecutive years. Televised nationally on pu blic television, the pro gram will be seen in this area on WUNG, Channel 58 at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 10. Modern-day explorers Allen Counter and David Evans have encapsuled their historic voyages and research in a new book, "I Sought My Brother” (MIT Press. 818.86) and will unveil tbeir thrilling story before the PBS au dience.
