Joe W. Harper .Assistant principal Harper Heads Fraternity Sixth District Joseph W. Harper III, a native Charlottean, was elected the 23rd District Representative of the Sixth District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The district has 81 chapters and ap proximately 2,300 mem bers throughout North and South Carolina. Harper earned a B.S. degree from Johnson C. Smith University and his master’s from North Carol ina AAT State University and the University of Ca lifornia. He also earned a six year administration de gree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Presently he is as sistant principal of East Mecklenburg High School. Since his initiation in the fraternity, Harper has been basileus of Pi Phi Chapter of Charlotte, the largest graduate chapter in the district, District Mar shall, Omega Man of the year at the local and dis trict levels and has just completed a two year term as first vice district re presentative. He is a ruling elder at First United Presbyterian Church, and sings with the famed Pi Phi Ensemble. Hie newly elected dis trict representative ex pressed that he will place much emphasis on scholar ship and community in volvement during his tenure. Other Chariotteans elect ed were Zoel S. Hargrave, Keeper of Records and Seal, and Calvin L. Brown, District Counselor. MRS. VIOLA CALDWELL ~~To take it easy Mrs. Viola Caldwell Retires wnen Viola Caldwell re tires this week, she’s going to go home, prop up her feet, and avoid doing laun dry for at least a week. It’s been almost 35 years since the 65-year-old Mrs. Caldwell first came to Mercy to work in the laun dry. Even then, she had a number of years’ experi ence working at the old Charlotte Julian and Do mestic laundries. “I’ve always done laun dry work; it’s what I know,” Mrs. Caldwell says. “Mercy has been good to me, and I’ll miss the peo ple. When she first came to Mercy, the Laundry De partment was located in a separate building near the hospital, and the soiled linen was simply sorted and sent out to Charlotte Laundry Company. After a building expansion, the hospital purchased its own equipment and got into the laundry business in earn est. Mrs. Caldwell, who lives in Charlotte with her son, Rfad The Charlotte Post i Each Week I Willie, says her retirement will give her more time to be with her two children, 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. “I’m going to go visit my daughter, Beatrice, in Phi ladelphia for a while, put my feet up and watch my soap operas,” she stated. A widow whose older son was killed in an accident in 1971, Mrs. Caldwell says she takes life as it comes. “I just don't worry about 'things I can't change.” IMLA Offers Opportunities MccTorey YMCA offers opportunities for youth to develop sports skills during the coming summer in bas ketball, tennis and football through a sports skills camp.
