BARBARA MACK ...Receives Awards In "Miss Black America" Contest . Barbara Mack Excited About Her Participation Barbara Mack returned from Philadelphia excited abouth her participation in the "Miss Black America" contest. From July 16-23 the 18-year-old Miss. Black North Carolina beauty spent hour upon hour in photographing sessions and preparing for the national competition which was held July 23. “I enjoyed the activities as a whole and just didn't want to say good-bye to all the contestants whom I fellowshipped with the en tire time I was there," Bar bara stated. Though Barbara com peted against 26 women she also stated she found friend ship in each of those 26. "It was strange, because even though we were competing against each other we all gave tips on makeup; we held each other's hand and we laughed and cried together the entire time we were in Philadelphia.” Bar bara smiled. Thotrgh the Olympic High School graduate didn’t win the title of Miss Black America she walked way with some awards that she feels certain she will never forget. One of those awards is participation in a beauty queen promotional project sponsored by Personal Plus, Inc., and Pretty Girl USA both of Chicago. Barbara was selected along with four other Miss Black USA contestants to visit Chicago August 12-16 for the promotional project. The project will include in terviews with some of the top modeling agencies and also career advice from peo ple who are in the modeling business. Barbara will also be in the Billiken Parade with Miss Black America, Sonya Robertson of Wisconsin. Othe^ activities in the Win dy City include barbecues and dances and interviews with Jet Magazine. WJPC radid and the Chicago Defender newspaper, "fm really looking forward to meeting Mayor Washington. Barbara revealed excitingly: another treat arranged through the promotion. As soon as Barbara returns from Chicago, she will be concentrating on another appearance. She was selected by the Bob Hope USO Tour coor dinator to travel with the troupe on an American and European tour in January . “At some places I will per form my talent from the pageant which was the “Theme From Mahogany." explained Barbara. She is also training under the direction of Ted Avery and will perform several other sonits. According to Barbara, she is eligible to compete for the Miss Black America ti tle next year. Single women with no dependents and who are ages 18-23 are eligi ble for the contest. In North Carolina Barbara had no competitors. However, she imagines that will change next year since North Carolina did have a representative this year. “It’s better to have so meone to compete against on the state level because it prepares you better for the national contest, Barbara pointed out. She was the first contestant the night of the pageant in Philadelphia. Barbara is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Howard. The Miss Black America Pageant will be aired in Charlotte August 27 at 5 p.m. on Channel 18.
