— ‘"By James Cuthbertsoasss^ss i James There is a bevy of good quarterbacks in the Southwestern 4A Conference this year. Bobby Junior at Olympic, Rickie Huntley at East, Haywood Workman at Myers Park, Chip Ferguson at Independence, Gene Brown at Garinger, James Moore at Hard ing and Stewart Cole at South Mecklenburg. Predicting the games is getting harder every year. My record so far is a dismal 8-7 after a terrible week last week. PREDICTIONS: Friday, September 16 West Charlotte: 1-1, 0-1 at East Mecklenburg: 2-0,1-0 The Lions are laying down at South while the Eagles were stunning the state’s fifth ranked Associated Press team. They came from behind to do it. This is East’s first home game. You can bet they’ll be ready. East Mecklenburg 15, Wes* Charlotte, 12. Olympic: 2-0, l'-O at Garingefr: 2-0,1-0 Who would have thought this would be a game of contenders. Time has a way of enlightening people. Make no mistake about it, the Wildcats have arrivecT Riding on Bobby Junior’s quarterbacking ability and the running of Ernie Blue and John Little, the Trojans should make this an interesting game. Olympic 17, Garinger 16. North Mecklenburg: i-l, 0-1 at Harding: 0-2, 0-2 Anthony Blakeney is running circles through Southwestern 4A defenses. He gained 267 yards against Myers Park in a losing effort. The Vikings are on the re bound after a tough loss to Garinger. North Mecklenburg 20, Harding 16. Independence: 1-1, 0-1 at Myers Park: 2-0,1-0 The Patriots were rocking-n-rolling until they met some high kicking Mustangs. This should be a high scoring contest. Chip Ferguson is a good leader. Myers Park 18, _ Independence 16. South Mecklenburg: 1-1,1-0 at West Mecklenburg: 0-2,0-1 The Sabres looked like a mean machine against West Charlotte. . West Mecklenburg won’t roll over and play dead but the Sabres are very ORGANIZED. South Mecklenburg 21, West Mecklenburg 16. THE RANKINGS East Mecklenburg* The Eagles have beaten two teams who were considered among the best in the state, Richmond County and Independence. I believe they have earned this right. FEAST WITH EAST. 2. Olympic - The Trojans played well to beat Hunter Huss 18-0 and 'made several turnovers against West Mecklenburg before coming back to win. A mark of a cham pionship team is to be able to win the games you play badly. TURN IT OUT TROJANS. 3. South Mecklenburg- The Sabres were number one and dropped. Flawless play against West Charlotte earns them this position. They looked like a machine. SOCK IT TO EM SABRES. 4. Garinger- Forget Garinger’s past. Led by sensational Gene Brown, the Wildcats have left the doldrums of the Southwestern 4A to become a playoff contender. GOOD LUCK, CATS. ..5. Myers Park- Small, but quick. The Mustangs have a sensational quarterback in Haywood Workman, the multi-purpose athlete who helps the Mustangs football, basketball and track programs. MOVE IT MUSTANGS. . 6. Independence- One game does not a season make. The Patriots lost a one pointer to archrival East. Look for them to bounce back. INTIMIDATE 'EM PATRIOTS. v. North Mecklenburg - The Vikings ran into a Wildcat whirlwind. Their talent is still there that held the Hickory defense to 7 yards rushing. VICTIMIZE EM VIKINGS. . .8. West Charlotte- The Lions’ poor per formance at South could be attributed to a change in the quarterback who was injury riddled. WHIP ’EM WEST CHARLOTTE. 9. Harding- When Anthony Biaxeney gets untracked the Rams could beat anyone in the state. They can score. That’s been proven. 10. West Mecklenburg- The Indians lost a game to Huss that I thought they would win. But the season is young and the Indians will get their share of scalps before the year is over. BEAT EM INDIANS. Katrina enjoys riding her bike, playing with her family and baby dolls and doing her homework. (Post Photo By Teresa Simmons) diaries Holland Named “Player Of The Week” Before the season be gan Charles Holland said the Sabres would be a contender. He didn’t fare well in the opening loss to Greensboro Page, but against West Charlotte he decided he would take matters into his own hands. Aided by a wedge that the Sabres set up for his return, Holland scampered 92 yards on a kickoff re turn to give the Sabres a lead they never relin quished in what was billed as a showdown between two of the conference’s top teams. Scoring once again on a one-yard run, he amassed almost 200 yards to begin his march to the 1,000-yard plateau. Holland is being heavily recruited by all the major colleges of the Southeast. The fleet footed 5’10”, 185-pound back on whose shoulders the Sabres for tunes will rise this season, believes the Sabres are back in the groove. He is The Charlotte READ THE POST!!
