Special Memories Of Thanksgiving Linger With Orr And Harrises ■ '■! By Karen Parker Poat Staff Writer Another Thanksgiving —holiday hag come and gone, but the fun and spe cial way the day was spent will linger with many Charlotteans. The Post talked to several commun ity people to find out what was different about this Thanksgiving compared to those celebrated in the past. ror Ms. Mae Orr, it was a trip to the home of Millie and Elmore Benjamin of Pensacola, FL. “It was the first Thanksgiving I spent away from family, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself,” Ms. Orr revealed. She and Mrs. Benjamin are elementary school chums. "Millie moved away when we were in the eighth Tfsae;" ms. orr ex plained. She pointed out they always kept close con tact and Mrs. Benjamin has visited Ms. Orr in Charlotte a few times. “However, I had never gone to Pensacola to visit her. I was there Thanks giving Day and we had a very nice dinner. However, the holiday was really just beginning for the two long time frinds. They left Pensacola the Friday after Thanksgiving and started for New Orleans to attend the Southern and Gram bllng College football game. ‘I had never been in a crawd Qf_over 60.000 black people and it was excit ing," she exclaimed. Ms. Orr even had the oppor tunity to see presidential candidate Jesse Jackson who also attended the game. One who admires the game of the pigskin Ms. Orr and the Benja mins decided to stay in New Orelans long enough to see the New Orleans Saints beat the Minnesota Vikings 17-16 "It was the first time I attended a professional football game." One fac tor which made the Saints Vikings game a sure thriller was that former Charlottean David Way mer was on the winning side. 1 While many Charlotteans ate turkey to the pitter patter of rain against their roofs, Ms. Orr was in Pensacola enjoying ‘‘blooming flowers and snow-white sand.” She stated, “I had a fantastic time.” Ana while it s always good to see family and friends, Mrs. Orr admitted she was not ready to return to the Queen City. The mother of one, Ms. Orr is a health instructor with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg - School Syatem and la the owner of Omnia Gift Shop, 3201-D Beattiea Ford Road. &nc ana bnaron Harris alaor lived a Tha nksghrtng which they will never for get. It was the first Thanks giving they spent as a married couple. Sitting in his office at North Carol ina Mutual Life Insurance Company, Eric happily re called the day. “It was very nice," he pointed out. "My wife, Sharon, fixed a delicious dinner." Though Eric has always enjoyed Thanksgiving din ners in the past, he men tioned this one was especially good. “It seems Sharan._put something special into every dish be cause it was our very first Thanksgiving since being married,” Eric continued. Another reason Thanksgiv ing was special was be cause Eric’s mother’s fun eral was the day before. “It made me realize how thankful I should be to have my wife,” Eric spoke. Spending the day with the Ham»~ were Loretta Manago, Gary Mumfohd, Peggy Sims and Bart Crawford. “We served on our very beat china which we received aa a wedding gift,” laughed Harris. For him nothing was better than consuming a lot of food and football and shar ing the day with his wife and best friends. Registration Underway For Winter Classes You can make every day of the New Year as bright as your holidays by regis tering for day or night winter classes through Central Piedmont Com munity College at Double Oaks Community Service Center. Registration dates for most classes will he held January 9-12, 1984. Most classes will also begin that week. Classes range from high school completion, adult basic education, job pre paration, sewing, linger ie construction, upholstery, draperymaking, carpentry and bricklaying. These classes are either free or low-fee classes. The Charlotte Area Fund, a service organizatiop for low-income families, will pay for the low foe classes_ taken by adults who sign up for their program.
