Church News Briefs Special Homecoming Service Highlights Grace AME Zion Celebration By Teresa Simmons —Post Managing Editor A special Homecoming service was held at Grace AME Zion Church in cele bration of the church’s 81st birthday recehtly. Rev. Marion B. Jones, minister of the church, delivered the Homecoming message. Nellie Oxner, chairman of the Homecoming Steer ing Committee, presented two special awards to Rika Blondene Dixon and Pres tina Shazon Haygood, the church’s two youngest members. They were cele brating their first Home coming. Awards were also presented to the following honorees for their out standing service to the church: C. Arthur Ander son, Minnie Barron, Bleaker Cathey, Edward Cathey, Isabella Craw ford. Zelma R. Draine, John A. Davis, Doreatha Green, Eva Houston, Henry Jackson, N. P. Jamison, Marie G. John son, Gladys Moreland, Annie Roberts, Jessie Westbrook, Titus Haygood and Robert “Bobby” Tyson. Grace'AME Zion Church was dedicated to the glory of God July 13, 1902. It is one of the oldest black •: churches-in Charlotte and the only religious edifice which survives in what was once the largest black re sidential section in Char lotte known as Brooklyn. The City Council of Charlotte and the Char lotte-Mecklenburg Historic Properties Commission on October 27, 1980, desig nated the property known as Grace AME Zion Church as Historic -Property. The building is architectually significant as one of the finer local examples of the late Gothic Revival styles. The church is located at 219 S. Brevard St. ST. PAUL St. Paul Presbyterian Church will hold its Twelve Tribes Rally sponsored by the minister and elders of the church Sunday, Decem ber 11, 6 p.m. A Christmas social, spon sored by the ushers, the church board and Sunday School will be held De cember 18 after the morn ing worship. EAST STONEWALL — The District..Pageant of the Charlotte District will be held December 2 at Gethsemane AME Zion Church. Participants from East Stonewall will repre sent their church. Recently East Stonewall held a successful members rally. “Thank-you” goes to all who helped bring souls to the Lord. Kimberly Renee Nash, a member of East Stonewall, was inducted into the Golden Chain Honorary Society at the University of North Carolina at Greens boro recently. She was one of 22 stu dents selected and the only blacR.She was chosen on the basis of leadership, scholarship, magnaminity, judgement and character. Ms. Nash is majoring in Speech Pathology and Communications at the university. Rev. Bernard Sullivan is pastor of East Stonewall AME Zion Church, 1729 Griers Grove Road. SHILOH INSTITUTIONAL Rev. Dr C. Don Steger, Assistant City Manager, City of Charlotte, will be the speaker for this year’s annual Men's Day Observ ance at Shiloh Institutional Baptist Church Sunday, December 4, during the 11 a.ffl. worship sendee. A native of Chattanooga, TN, Dr. Steger received Ms B.A. degree from Bethune Cookman College, Daytona Beach, FL, his B.D. de gree from Gammon Theo logical Seminary, Atlanta, GA, an the Ph.D. degree from the University of South Florida, Tampa, FL He holds membership in the Charlotte Rotary Club, the International City's Manager's Association, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Robinson has been a great help to his congre gation and to other people by his great teaching, .jaceaehing and great con cern for the salvation and learning ot all people. He firmly believes that “in order for a church to grow, the church must know.” He studies hard the Word of God and attends various seminars of training for pastors so that he will be well informed and able to help his church families by the help of God. Among many other affiliations, he is President of the Zion Missionary Baptist Sunday School Congress, Wades boro, NC which comprises 37 Baptist churches, and he teaches Church Ushering throughout North Carolina. Pastor Robinson is mar ried to the former Annie M. Geiger and they are the parents of six children. Mt. Moriah hopes that Rev. Bernard Sullivan .E. PILGRIM Mount Pilgrim Church of Christ On The Rock has organized a special com mittee for the month of December which will visit homes spreading the story about the birth of Jesus. Under the direction of Associate Pastor Rebecca Gordon, the committee was organized primarily to visit people who are ill and un able to leave their homes for church services. “If people can’t come to church, it’s our duty to take the church to them," the pastor stated.
