Shown In Death Penalties
Att. Thomas Harvey,
located at 1001 Beatties
ford Road, felt that the
first finding Is probably
accurate, end be bad no
reason to disagree •
1- The data an the
homicides showed that, in
general, a death eenteace
was unlikely except when
the murder was committed
with another crime such as
robbery or rape, B. when
more than one person was
killed and C. when the
murderer killed a strainer.
“That’s because robbery
in e lot of Instances leaves
the person robbed feeling
like they've been put before
public array. Rape la
something very nersonsl
which involves high emo
tions. Yon would have to
aak a women to get the gut
feeUngs ae to what they
thick about rape. I know
It's a bad 'irtlhig when it
hits home or you. It’s more
mrprwml Alexander His
reaction to situation B. was
“I’m split on capital pun
an eye for an ey*. I'm for it,
if M’s justified when mere
then one person ft mur
dered.” for situation C. he
said, “If he’s killing any
one whether it’s a strangsr
or not, it’s hot justifiable.
Nothing should be that tar

Graves’ statement to a
death sentence when rob
bery or rape is committed
was “i don’t condone it
(death sentence). Someone
will have to find a punish
ment to measure the type
of crime committed. The
death penalty has not
detered crime but has been
used ss an injustice to the
black race as a whole. Tob
many black men who were
not guilty were murdered
by the state.” To situation
B. and C. she mentioned, “I
don't think anyone has the
right to take a life whether
it's legal or illegal. Ven
geance la not ours. When
we begin to reach out and
help people like we do
during Christmas time, a
lot of these things will take
cere of themselves. The
majority of people on death
row are there because of
peaskm crimes. We most
make situations wbere peo
ple ire more able to cope
andreaaon. The whole sys
tem Is screwed up, because
Ate wrong people are In
control of the correctional
institutions.”
It s much easier, to give
a death sentence, if the
murderer commits other
crimes like robbery or
rapt. There are always
mitigating circumstances
Which cause the judflp to
give lighter sentences,”
declared Att. Harvey. For
situation B. he pointed oat,
"For more than one feflony
you’ve got to have greater
punishment ” He thinks the
death sentence should be
given, if the murderer kills
a stranger. “The act ie
mare repulsive when a
stranger is killed. There ie
usually aO reason for a
confrontation ending In
death except that another
crime is bring perpetrated
such as robbery.”
The final Stanford find
ing was 3. a death sen
tence also was found to be
slightly more likely when
the victim was a woman.
MT. Alfred Alexander
voiced, “In my way of
thinking a life ie a Ufa.
Everyone is suppoaed to be
equal. My Bfe ie precious
too. There should be an
equal justice system no
matter who is killed ”
Mrs Carrie Orawes
analysed, “If the victim is
a white aromas yea, black
woman ne. Look at where
the black woman is today.
She has been sexually
hSrrassesUnd abused. She
has to use herself as a
wedge for her blade hum.
She’s still at the bottom at
the econotnic, political and
social ladder, and tew
black* have gotten over the
line. Our Mack men Aave
been abused so long that we
have to help tbem cope and
show them that someone
cares.’’ *
Att. Thomas Harvey ex- ■
plained, "We tend to think
that whenever the victim is
a female our society should
demand more severe
punishment. Our laws pro
tect women a little more
when they are injured.”
