f Tomorrow! W eholarship Winners 1 Who are tomorrow's black leaders? This question is heard more and more these days. Audrey Adams and Fre derick Jones, m may an swer the call for leader ship, for they are receiving the skills needed to fulfill that rale. through Army HQTC. Ms. Adams and Mr. Jooat are 1900 winners of Jzrziu scnaiarsmps. Now in tneir third year, they have dis covered the rewards for the training, specifically the amount of skill they pos sess to handle situations calling for leadership and management techniques. For Cadet Adams, a junior at Western Mary land College, Westminster, Maryland, Army ROTC has been a real challenge “I’ve enjoyed ROTC. I’ve been able to do so many things that 1 never thought I’d be doiqg...such as making quick decisions in my role as a Cadet Bat talion Sergeant Major.” Ms. Adams plans to pursue a career in military intel ligence, utilizing her skills in Spanish and English, which are also her majors. . » . Society and one day pi»n« to take up writing as a second career goal. Frederick Jones is looking forward to becom ing a commissioned of ficer, but his eye is on a personal career goal as well-to join the Army Medical Corps. A biology . major at Wake Forest Uni versity in Winston-Salem, N.C., Fred applied for the ROTC scholarship to save money on his education and serve in the military. rTea s leadership abili ties, like Audrey’s, have improved greatly as a result of the ROTC lead ership course. “It opened my eyes to deficiencies I had in my leadership ability that I have since corrected.” Cadet Jones’ extra-curricular activities include being president of his chapter, of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, resident assistant of his dormitory, a member of the Catholic Student Association and a Big Brother in the Big Brother-Big Sister Pro gram in Winston-Salem. Commenting on Cadet Jones’ future as an officer, Major Robert A. Lewis, Assistant Professor of Mili tary Science states, “I see him as an outstanding of ficer. He has a high re gard for academic disci pline and has adapted greatly to the challenges that Wake Forest offers.” Army ROTC scholar ships are awarded solely on merit, not on household income. After completion of college, scholarship re cipients are commissioned as second lieutenants and will spend four years on I Keep your out-of-town friends informed on what’s happening in Charlotte by sending them a copy of The Charlotte Pott each week. The cost is only $17.68 per year. tmi active duty and two in the Reserves, or eight years in the Reserves. The scholarships are awarded on a two-, three or four-year basis and pay for tuition, required edu cational fees and an amount for books, supplies and equipment. Plus, they provide a subsistence al lowance of up to |t,000 each school year they are in effect. Four-year scholarships are awarded on a compe titive basis to students ot tering college as freshmen. Two- and three-year scho larships are awarded to students already enrolled in college. The application period for four-year scho larships will end Novem ber 15.
