" I Attorney General Rufus Edmiaten now campaign ing for governor, appoint ed Augusta Bernadette Turner as an associate at torney in the Human Re sources Division of the Justice Department Ms. Turner attended Georgetown University, UNC-Greensboro and North Carolina/Central ' University School of Law. Turner’s responsibilities include representing the State’s interest at involun tary commitment proceed ings and serving as general legal advisdr-to John Urn sted Hospital and its staff at Butner. Lauch Fairclotb is using his apposal of state utili ties conrtnissioners as the prime argument to why he is the better gubernatorial candidate. “It’s time some body who wants to hold the office of Governor steps up and tells the truth on that issue,” Fairdoth present ed. -'-- --- 9r. According to the gubernatorial candidate, that state switched back to an appointed commission after charges that utility companies made generous contributions to utility commissioners' expensive statewide campaigns. Faircloth insists, “To dangle the idea of a utili ties commission in front of the people as a solution to utility rates is a cruel hoax, especially to people on fixed incomes.” Lt. Gov. Jimmy Green, on the other hand, is plac ing most of his attention on the private day care cen ters. The President of the N.C. Association of Private Day Care Centers, John Dees, endorsed Green re cently on behalf of the 1,600 association members. Bob Jordan in his race for Lt. Gov., has selected some Charlotteans to work on his steering committee comprised of 24 people throughout the state. Mil dred Baxter-Davis, super visor of the Soil and Water Conservation Dis trict, is one of the Char lotteans selected. Others include Linda Ashendorf, 1980 N.C. co-chairman of the Carter for President James Hunt ,... ,N\C^ Governor Committee; Dr. Monroe Gilmour, vice chairman of N.C. Advisory Council on Aging. Democratic candiate Don Wiseman stated he wants to be the state’s next Commissioner of Labor be cause his professional safe ty background and his experience as both a work er and manager uniquely qualify him to serve in that capacity. If he gains control of the Department of Labor, Wiseman assured he will provide the necessary lead ership to make North Carolina competitive for the new industries being established in the state. 'Gov. Hunt will announce his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Wilson County’s Hunt High School gymnasium. Another gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Bob Hannon, is working to raise $100,000 for his campaign. The candidate filed for of fice January 17.
