Dh Snz3i W31 Lead Temple’s ' » r% ’ * By Lori Grier Post 8UH Writer • In November, 1983, Rev. Gene E. Gilmore, pastor of Temple Chapel Baptist Church, preached for die 30th anniversary of Dr. Nelson H. Smith, Jr., pas tor of New Pilgrim Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. - -Beginning March ll-w Dr. Smith will preach (hir ing the Pre-Spring Crusade at Temple Chapel Baptist Church, 900 September - I-aoa.-! “I’m trying to invite Charlotte and surround ~ ing communities to hear this great preacher as be expounds on God’s Word. He will be preaching on Monday night March 11, at 7:30 p.m.," said Gilmore. Or. Smith and his mem bership of more than 3,000 is in the process of build ing an elementary school, shopping center and Phase —II of the New Pilgrim— Towers. His purpose is to generate funds through the corporations within the church and to make jobs available for his members. His challenges is to see New Pilgrim develop her full potential and aspire for self-development and inde pendence. Rev. Smith looked at the plight of the elderly and the handicapped, in a land of p enty, living in sub standard housing, unwant ed, fearful of their lives and, yes, prisoners n their homes and said, “this is not right.” After many years of agonizing thoughts, plan ning, hard work, God's guiding hand and sustain ing power, Ground Break ing Ceremonies for the New Pilgrim Towers, a 123-unit housing complex designed for the elderly 1 and handicapped, was held on September 16,1979, at 4 p.m. On October 30, 1980, the complex was complet ed with the first tenants moving in on November 1, 1980.Truly, this is one of the highlights of his 30 years of being in the grips of God at New Pilgrim. • At an early age, pastor Smith, no doubt, said in the .Pastor of New Pilgrim words of Harry Beecher, “There Is not a heart but has its moments of long ing, yearning for some thing better, nobler, holier than it knows now." Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “Every now and then a man's mind is stretched by a new idea and never shrinks back to its original proportion.”_ Pastor Smith’s idea has sought to expose New Pil grim to the spiritual as well as the practical side of Christian living by devel oping a few of his many programs, such as Educa tion and Service - Church - i sponsored Radio Broadcast, j tion and Service - Church Sonsored Radio Broadcast,, New Pilgrim Day Care Center, Monthly Brother hood Breakfast, Educa tional Foundation, Chris tian Men’s Service Guild, New Pilgrim Homes, New Pilgrim 1 Towers, Tape Ministry, Sheepfold, and Deaf Ministry; Mission - Church on Wheels, Haitian Project (to construct a school in Haiti), and Con tributions to a Mission Station in Africa and Basketball team. Annual Church Banquet, Annual Church Picnic, and New Members Fellowship Din ner. He was baptized, li censed and ordained by his father, the late Nelson Henry Smith, Sr., pastor of Morning Star Baptist □lurch. Called to the ministry in 1947, he has served as pastor of the Christian Union Baptist Church, Crighton, Ala., Union Baptist Church, Clanton, Ala ; Tabernacle Baptist Church, Beatrice, Ala.; Shiloh Baptist Church, Montevallo, Ala. and New Pilgrim for the past SO yean. The son of the late Nelson fleary Smith, Sr. and Lillie Aim eta Smith was honv in Brewtoo, - Ala., on August 23, 1930. He was the third of five child- , ren. Smith received his education from Bethlehem Industrial Academy Ele mentary School, Monroe ville, Ala.. Protect Your Skin From Winter’s Chill Your skin needs special care to keep it looking beauti ful every season of the year. And it needs extra pampering to protect it from winter weather, especially the ex tremes you experience as you move from the cold outside -into dry, overheated interiors. These unhealthy contrasts can result in unpleasant dry ness and the ashiness caused by dry cells on darker skin. Now, more than ever, be sure you take a few minutes every morning and night to take these four simple steps to lasting good looks. First, cleanse to remove makeup, grime, pollution, ex cess oil. Follow with a toner to refresh and stimulate your skin, and to remove the last traces of dirt and cleanser. Then, energize. This helps new cells reach the surface of your skin faster, helping your skin to repair itself from the ravages of winter weather. Finally, moisturize to protect your skin from the environ ment and to replenish your __skin’s moisture supply. If your skin dries out in winter weather, make these changes in your routine. Try a creamy rinse-off or tissue off cleanser instead of soap and water. Using a toner is still important. And be sure to energize with Avon’s Momentum Cell Energizing Formula. It’s essential! Lab oratory tests prove that skin not only looks younger, it actually feels and acts younger in as little as 14 days! Finish with an even richer day and night moisturizer than you use the rest of the year. To protect the delicate skin around your eyes, use Nurture Replenishing Eye Cream from Avon, both day and night. Years of research have gone into developing Avon's vast skin care line. . . there are skin care products and an Avon Regimen designed especially to meet the needs of your skin.
