The LEAD Program in Business, Inc., which stands for Leadership Edu cation and Development, has been given $10,000 by R. J. Reynolds Industries, Inc. of Winston-Salem, NC. Marshall Bass, RJR vice president, said the com pany is impressed with the LEAD concept and the pro gram’s record. “LEAD offers a unique opportunity for some of the nation’s most talented minority high school stu dents to be exposed to some of the very best schools of business,” Bass said. “We believe that these efforts will serve to hasten the entry of minorities into the business community.” , Since 1980, LEAD has %wrte S^mpoautn Flatuied A road race and a Sports Symposium have been set by the YWCA as events to celebrate the or ganization’s birthday - 125 years nationally, 82 years locally. Both will take place at the Uptown Center, 418 E. Trade. The race, one mile and five K, will kick off at 9 and 9:30 a.m., Easter Monday, April 23. Registration and packet pick-up is set for 7:30 to 8:45 that morning. Race day registration closes promptly at 8:30. Fee for either race is $5, and includes a T-shirt. Awards will be given im mediately following the 5K, in the YWCA auditorium. The first annual Sports Symposium will be 7:30 - 9:30 p.m., April 26. “Sports Medicine,” “Eating Aero bically,” “Swim Stroke Clinic,” are among the sub jects. Experts participat ing include Dr. Joseph Estwanik, M.D., Metrolina Orthopaedic Medicine Clinic; Terry Bazarre, Ph.D., Assistant Profes sor, UNC-Greensboro Department of Food and Nutrition; Doug Fleck, coach, YWCA Pirhana Na- tional Championship Team. Cost for the symposium is $5 for members, $6 for non-members. For those participating in both the race and the symposium, cost is $8. Ms. Ulasiewicz notes that water will be provided mid way through the 5K race and at the finish. Showers will be available at the YW following the race. Timing will be electronic, splits at each mile. According to Peter J. Scarperi, president of the LEAD program, the pro gram’s purpose is “to be gin widening the pool of future minority business leaders.” Of the 450 high school juniors and seniors select ed to participate the past four years, approximately 80 percent have been black, 12 percent have been His panic and eight percent have been Asian. “By 1985,” Scarperi said, “with expanded support from corporations and uni versities, 300 new student leaders will become in volved each year.” R.J.
