For the South Mecklenburg Sabres last week, David Carr had two hits and three runs batted in for the Sabres when they beat East Mecklenburg...Stacy Hicks hit a home run for North Mecklenburg as they defeated archrival West Charlotte... Independence - The Patriots retain the number one position despite a tough loss to Garinger. 2. North Mecklenburg - The Vikings seem to be on the move to the top. 3. West Charlotte - The Lions are still growing for their place in the sun. 4. Garinger - The Wildcats defeated the Patriots and showed that they belong in first division. 5. South Mecklenburg - The Sabres with David Carr and Tony Darnell have some tough pitching. 6. Olympic - Despite some tough losses, the Trojans are always capable of moving back to first division. 7. East Mecklenburg - David Duke of the Eagles is a tough pitcher. 8. Harding - The Rams are hustling. 9. West Mecklenburg - The Indians beat the Mustangs to move out of the cellar. 10. Myers Park - The Mustangs have the best hitter in the league, but it takes nine to field a competitive team. I ENNIS TEAM RANKINGS ••*• Sooth Mecklenburg - The Sabres are always tough to beat. 2. Myers Park - With Eric Little at number one, the Mustangs are hard to handle. 3. North Mecklenburg - The Vikings have Darrell Reid, Junior McGill and Keith Chisholm. They could be the surprise of the conference. 4. East Mecklenburg - Only a tenth grader, Eric Abrams has moved into the number one position. 5. West Charlotte - The Lions have a tough young rookie in Brian Watt. 6. Independence - The Pats are looking for an upset. In Triple County League Queen City Rangers, Metro Phillies Rack Victories By BUI Johnson Pott Editor-Publisher Two of the favored teams in the Triple County Semi Pro Baseball League kicked off their 1964 sea son in fine fashion last weekend. The Queen City Rangers edged the Rock Hill O’s, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in Rock Hill, S.C., in a con test interrupted after four and a half innings by a heavy rain storm. The Ran gers mauled the Statesville Twins, 16-6, in Statesville Sunday afternoon. In the meantime, the newly organized Metro Phillies opened their cam paign with a 16-3 romp over the D. J. All Stars Satur day afternoon. They fol lowed with an 16-4 shellack ing of the Rock Hill O’s Sunday afternoon. Celebrating the return of popular manager Herman Thomas, the Rangers re ceived airtight pitching from righthander Willie Patterson, who gave up three hits to outpitched Clinton Perry. Patterson fanned one batter and didn’t issue a walk to re cord his first triumph of the young season. Perrvwas even stingier, allowin^faly two hits while striking out five and walking five. It was the walks that sent Perry reeling to his first setback. He walked Todd MCClain and Mike Ttximp icti in the top of the second Bobby Thompson . ....Poles 4 homeruns to set the stage for Ricky Grier’s double which plated two runs. The O’s tied the scores in their half of the second when Janies Mobley was sate on an error. Richard Hemphill followed with a triple to left center. Thompson knotted- the count on another Ranger tniscue. The Rangers took the lead for good when left fielder Kenneth Cuthbert son drew a walk, stole se cond and third and raced across the plate on Thomp^ son’s infield grounder. Thomas’ crew showed more muscle against the Twins. They slanimed 14 base hits against two Statesville burlers and was never headed after they racked seven runs in the first inning. *wc*y uner, Bobby Thompson, Bob White, Darryl Berry and Mike Peake were the big guns. Grier contributed a grand slam homerun and a pair of jingles. Thompson hit a -fiomenm and a single, White had two singles. Berry a triple and a single, and Peake a single and a double. Darryl Jackson, who re ceived relief help from Henry Houston in the sixth, was the winning pitcher. He allowed six hits and struck out four. Houston proved to be equally effective, giving up four hits with two strike outs and a pair of base on balls. The Phillies took their big bats to Newton Satur day and, with Alfred Thompson leading the oo sla lighter with three home rum, • triple for six at bats, encountered little op position in rolling to their first win of the year. Lefthander Lester Styles pitched the victory, giving up three runs on six hits. He walked one batter and struck out seven. John Boyd, Ricky Care lock, Mike Smith, Stanley Falls, Gregg Grier, (keg Si to and Murphy Morris were the other Phillies who stood out in the win. xne Phillies were too powerful in Rock Hill Sun day afternoon where they mauled the O’s, m, be hind the heavy hitting of John Boyd, Ricky Care lock, Greg Sito, Gregg Grier, Mike Smith and Stanley Falls. - < Archie Morris notched his first win of the year with a 7-hit performance that included homeruns to John Mobley and Richard Hemphill. The Phillies will face powerful Hoskins Saturday afternoon in the league’s “Game of the Week.” The Rangers will host the Bowling Green Hor nets Saturday afternoon at Plato Price. Both games will start at 2:30 p.m. Bernard Thomas, a 17 year-old Garinger High School righthander, will be on the mound for the Ran gers.
