Democratic and Re publican primaries for of fices ranging from Presi dent down to the Board of County Commissioners, the Board of Education elec tion, and questions on a State constitutional amend ment, a redistricting plan, * and City bonds. -Post reporter Audrey Lodato recently asked downtown pedestrians three, questions pertaining ta the elections: What do you think are the main issues in the upcoming elections May 8? Are you planning to vote? and Do endorsements of political candidates by organiza tions or the media influ f eace how you vote? Here are their respons es: Bobby Richmond, Char — 1?^' haven’t even -- thought about it. I don’t Harold Ward /....Against bond issue know yet if I’ll vote. No, endorsements don’t influ ence my choice of candi dates.” Harold Ward, Charlotte: “As far as the bond issue is concerned, they can put it back in a cubbyhole and keep it there. They could spend money in better ways than they’re doing. I Wanda Cherry .Still undecided do plan to vote, and no, endorsements don’t influ ence me.” Wanda Cherry,Char lotte: “I’m 8till undecided about the issues but I do intend to vote. I’m mainly influenced by what I read and by what we discuss at precinct meetings.” Esther Sadler, Gaston Esther Sadler .Decides for herself iar “You caught me off guard; I haven’t really thought about it yet. Yes. I plan to vote, and I de cide all by myself who to vote for. I think I can decide better than any one.” Robert Wilson, Char lotte: “I think the school board elections are very Robert Wilson ...School Board important important. We need better schooling, and if the re quirements go up, we need sufficient funds to make it work. Yes, I will vote May 8. As for endorsements, I don’t always go by the majority. I go by what I’ve heard or seen in the past from the candidate. What they said in the past has a lot to do with what they’ll Wade Webber .To vote for Hunt do in the future." Wade Webber, Char lotte: "I listen on the news and I've been wondering about all the Helms ads against Hunt. I’d like to see them in a debate. I don't think I’d vote for Helms, though. I kt-.'J , .. - -« \ T NEW CITY-COUNTY GOVERNMENT CENTER ~~To be buih downtown The City of Charlotte has a triple ‘A’ credit ratii« and a capacity of over 990 million in bond issue PMMa,” revealed Bobby Lowery, co-chairperson for the City-County Govern ment Center Bond Com mittee, in a recent Chw Mte Pest article Concerning this bond issue, the City Council is hoping that Charlotte resi dents will agree that "own ing is cheaper than rent ing.” Due to overflow, the City is now paying almost fl minion a year for rent ing office space in the Cameron-Brown and Inde pendence Buildings. However, officials stress that in 30 years the City will own the $32.7 million structure, saving the city $24 million. * More benefits will ac crue, states the City Coun cil, because the new City County Government Cen ter will be more conven ient and effective for the > ' .. - ' * t > • ■ ■ T— > -♦ .. . public. The new center will centralize city-county de partments such as sewer and zoning information un der one roof for easier public access. There will be 19 city offices and seven county offices located in the building. A larger City Council chamber will accommodate more citi zens who wish to observe or participate in City Council meetings. The proposed City County Government Cen ter bonds will be listed on the ballot as "Public Build ing Bonds.” A1 Jarreau To Appear On “Days Of Our Lives” Grammy Award-winning vocalist A1 Jarreau will give a musical perfor mance and make his act ing dfbut in a daytime drama when he portrays himself on NBC-TV’s “Days of Our Lives” (Mon days-Fridays, 12-1 p.m. NYT) beginning April 30. He will be joined in con cert by series regular Gloria Loring. Also appear ing will be the popular rock group Billy and the Beaters. Jarreau made his acting debut on the air Monday and Tuesday, April 30 and May 1. He performed in the concert, which was a part of the drama, May 4, 7 and 8. He sang some of his greatest hits, plus a num ber from his new album, scheduled to be released later this year. Jarreau’s career covers 'n the spectrum from jazz to pop. He received honors for top jazz performances in 1977,1978 and 1979, and won the coveted Grammy for Best Pop Male Vocal Per formance in 1981 for bis platinum album, “Breakin' Away.” Also appearing in the concert segment was “Days of Our Lives" re gular Gloria Loring, who plays Liz Chandler in the series. An accomplished vocalist, she has per formed on stage as well as on television She is sched uled to sing a composition written by Bob Seger titled “Even Now,” and “Quiet Please,” by Peter Allen In the finale, Jarreau and » Loring sang "Take Me To The Pilot,” by Elton John The concert segment will begin on the series May 4
