Can didates speak before civic groups, churches and com munity organizations and massive advertising starts. Everyone seems to be in the process of politicking. But there is one group of elected officials that you won’t see passing out cam paign buttons or bumper stickers. Those officials are the judges that are elected to serve in the various courts of our ju dicial system. Because they are not allowed to campaign, there is a good chance that many voters may not' be aware that there are any judges that are running for office. On this year’s ballot there will be two black _judges wtyo will be running • for office - Judge Henry Frye, who is presently state Supreme Court judge, and judge Michael Todd, r who presently serves as District Court judge. Justice Frye is the only blade judge on the North Carolina Supreme Court. He was appointed to the court by Governor Hunt in February, 1983. He is the only candidate who has both Democratic opposi tion in the primary on May 8 and Republican opposi tion in the general elec tion in November. Prior to his appointment to this office, Justice Frye had acquired it very, im pressive background in his profession. He has prac tical law for 21 years. A graduate of A&T State University, Frye received his J.D. degree from the University of North Caro lina where he served on the Law Review. From both institutions, Frye graduat ed with honors. Also to seek reelection is judge Michael Todd. For the past four and a half years Todd has served in the 26th District. Throughout his term as judge, Todd has proven to be fair, competent and ex perienced. “I’ve sat on the bench for nearly five-years and the consensus is that I’ve dealt with cases fairly during that time,” replied Todd. The length of time that Todd has served as Dis trict Court judge has al lowed him to notice some changes that he would like to see occur in the court system. In addition to seeing the courts receive more money to employ additional people who can make more cases move swifter, he would also like to see a deferment process that would prevent minor traffic offenses from ever entering court. A native Charlottean, Todd is a graduate of Myers Park High School, Duke University and Van derbilt Law School. He has served as assistant state attorney general and he is a member of the NAACP and the North Carolina Bar.
