Radio Station WGIV Contributing To New Dance Craze At a point, it may have been called a fever, but now with the rage that breakdancing has been sweeping across the na tion, that fever has result ed into an epidemic. Also seeing a rebirth is the art of rapping.—r— . And WGIV is contribut ing to it aU.'~SBn8syrTr . week, at different ip ter- , vais of the day if you tune in to radio station WGIV, thrfr arr lnral jma^slun spilling out a rap so rhyth mic -and flowing that it seems almost effortless. And that’s just the begin ning. For the past few weeks, WGIV has been sponsoring a Breakdance contest at the Queen Park Theatre. The first week of the contest reported that 400 people were in attendance and another 400 had to be turned away. Well, I bad the privilege of sitting in on - one of WGIV’s "Weekly rapping break da nee contests and believe me, when I say mat what those kids were, doing that night is deserv ing of praise. I can’t honestly say that I’m crazy about rapping, but I can say that I can see some good out of this ver bal artform. It takes time to sit down and pen lyrics. It takes time to perfect what you’re going to say, ensuring that there are no flaws in your execution. And this is thrjpod Oat I saw that night Because' dedication and hard work is allowed to develop in qne area, surely it will flourish in others. As for the breakdancers, well, you have all my ad miration. I’m still in SUfe, each time I see breakdafc-' cers spinning on hands, heads and other parts of the anatomy. It still fas cinates me to watch tweak dancers move their bodies as if they are void of bones. Hie particular dance steps I witnessed . took imagin ation, along with hours and hours of endless practices. WITH I.OKKTtX' MANAGflC • —• - - "rJ .orttU-- JLu. . l, ' What these kids are learning, in my opinion, is that in order to be the best at whatever you choose, then you must be willing to sacrifice and pay the dues. Although these weekly con tests are on a small scale three’s no telling where they could lead. Just ask the Junior Pop Takers, they’ve won the contest two consecutive weeks.
