Mrs. Harris: “Competition Is Good For
Your Morale”
By Jalyne Strong

“Competition is good for
your morale,” comments
Hattie Harris about her
participation in the Church
Woman of the Year con
test. She is the contestant
for Chappell Memorial
Baptist and she is quick to
point out all the benefits of
the prestigious contest.
"I’m very enthusiastic
about it,” exudes Harris.
“I feel that we as women
should do as much as we
can for the church. Also we
are setting an example for
the young people-letting
them know how important
it is to get involved in
community activities that
will aid the church.”
Harris refers to the tan
talizing prizes last, but cer
tainly not least. “And the
beautiful prizes,” she
smiles, “I would most like
to win the trip. And I don’t
have a fur jacket,” she
adds.
This is the second time
around for Harris who
participated in the contest
last year. She projects
added advantages of
tackling it again this year.
“More of our church mem
_bers understand the con
test regulations now. TBvT
a good list of committee
persons. We’ve already
begun.”

Harris has also come up
with anew strategy for this
year’s contest. She is
seeking the assistance of
out of town people. “So
many of the churches in
—Charlotte are involved in
the contest and each has
their own Churchwoman
contestant. I'm planning to

OUR ADVERTISERS
Reverend Jesse Jackson "tossed his
hat" into the political arena, and many
astute politicians say that his presence
has generated some positive and contro
versial actions in the selectiort of political
leaders. It is not my intent to discuss the
pros and cons of Reverend Jackson's
political ambitions, but I do want to tell
you his actions should effect Black
Americans.
As a political candidate. Reverend
Jesse Jackson has awakened a new
awareness of the vote among Blacks. But
his efforts will go for naught if Blacks do
not learn to separate racial pride and
emotionalism from reality. Yes. we should
be excited about a Black man making
headlines for his presidential campaign,
but we must convert this inspiration into
some positive gains for Black Americans.
In other words, although you have voted
during the Democratic primary race, it
will all be meaningless if you do not vote
in November. Also, don't gear all your
time and efforts to the selection of a Pres
ident. You must use your vote to elect
members of Congress and state and local
officials who are sensitive to the prob
lems and needs of the Black, the poor and
others who may be shackled with feelings
of hopelessness and helplessness.
