Women In The Ministry Editor's Note: The purpose of articles such as this one and the one a few months ago concerning healing is not to cause strife between Christians or other denominations. Instead we seek to inform and before each idea is conveyed it is preceded by prayer. By Teresa Simmons Post Managing Editor “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor freeman, there is neither male nor female, because you are all one in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:28. “It will be in the last <Jays, says God, that I shall pour out My Spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy and your youths will see visions, your elders shall dream dreams, and on My hand servants and My bondmaids I shall in those days pour out My Spirit and they will prophesy.’’ Act. 2:17-18. These are two scriptures from the Bible which refer to females and their relationship to God. Today, as well as in the past, females serve as teachers, ministers and even as prophets of God’s word. In Exodus 14:20 Miriam the sister of Aaron and Moses was named as a prophetess. In Judges 4:4 another prophetess respon sible for bringing Israelites back to God was Deborah. When we come to the New Testament, however, there are those who chose verses from the Bible stating that women are to “...learn quietly with complete sub mission.” I Timothy 2:11 or I Corinthians 14:34 "Let the women keep silent in the churches for they are not allowed to speak.” Spirit Square . During the Biblical times only the men were educated and were always seated on the opposite side of the church away from the females. When the new covenant came into existence women had many questions and would shout questions across the room, probably to their husbands. This disturbed the service however. Therefore the scripture In I Corinthians continues (14:35) “If they wish to learn something, let them inquire of their own hus bands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.” The Bible refers to the female being subordinate W—men and having complete submission. Many spiritual teachers have revealed that she is only to be dominated by her husband, not by just any man on the street. The woman’s place is in the home? the pulpit is for the masculine-people look up to a masculine voice; a woman cannot handle the affairs of a church, nor can she handle rebuke. As one minister put it male ministers will have more competition and fear if female ministers started taking ova- the pulpit-there will be less money for them. Another anonymous minister stated that he pre fers a male minister ova a female minister. He referred to Matthew 16: 18-19. “Jesus gave Peter the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. Peter was a man and he represents man not woman," the minister stated. "When a female is j-j-J teaching and someone questions her, she cannot handle the stress," he con tinued. “I’m not against female ministers, but I am not all the way for it. I would be called neutral." The attacks against female ministers are evident within the Southern Baptist Convention SBC also. There are reports that female ministers, even after being ordained are not fully accepted. The General Baptist Conven tion has on its future agenda the consideration of female ministers and deacons. This is an ob vious admittal that the "female” issue needs to be discussed. There are many female ministers in Charlotte. About two years ago the Post ran a series on such ministers. One recently stepped forward to convey the prejudices against her - not because of her religion, but because of her gender. There afe also female ministers who have not experienced negative set backs because of their gen der. Next week we will talk to two female ministers - one in each realm.
