The Independence Patriots have brought
a state championship to the City of
Charlotte and the Southwestern 4A Con
ference.
CONGRATULATIONS! PATRIOTS.
Greg Solomon-was the here-in this
championship game as ‘ he fired a three
hitter at New Hanover of the eastern 4A
Conference to give the Patriots the deciding
game 5-0 of a best of three series.
The Pats won the first game 3-2 in 12
innings and lost the second 6-0. _
The heroes.
Greg Solomon threw a three hitter at the
Wildcats.
Jeff Biddy hit a two run homer for the
- Patriots with two out in the first with one on
for a 2-0 lead. .
In the third inning with two out, the New
Hanover pitcher walked Mark
Biddy singles and David Short’s single to
right field made it 3-0.
In the fifth, Withers doubled and scored
on a Robbie Kistler Single.
The last run came on a one-out homer by
Wes Black in the sixth.
The championship was the second for.
Independence team, having won the soccer
championship in 1970.
Other baseball championships were
: gained by Charlotte High School, Class A in
• 1930 and 1932; North Mecklenburg 2A in
; 1958; North Mecklenburg 4A in 1966;
; Garinger 4A in 1965; and Myers Park 4A in

The Patriots finished 23 and 6 on the
season and what a season it was.
Although the Patriots lost to North
1 . Mecklenburg in the finals of the South—
r western 4A tournament, they put It together
; and beat North Forsyth, Roxboro Person,
i and Winston-Salem Reynolds in their march
; to the finals.

Wallace, a former stand
out in athletics and
academics at Olympic
High School was recruited
for the North Carolina Cen
tral program based on his
talents on the football field.

“This year, I wasn’t
expected to start,” he said,
“but I worked hard and I
beat out one of our sepjor
players.
Two big games for
Wallace were Johnson C.
Smith University and
Fayetteville State Univer
sity.
“I caught three inter
ceptions in the game with
the Golden Bulls of Johnson
C. Smith University,” he
said. “That was especially
rewarding because it was
played at Memorial
Stadium. For that game I
was named CIAA Player of
the Week.”
In the Fayetteville State
University game, Melvin
caught two fourth quarter
interceptions which

The Eagles were 8-1-1
last year and Wallace
believes that they can do
better again.
He led the NAIA and the
CIAA in interceptions.
"I like playing the defen
sive back position,” said
Wallace, "because it shows
my versatility. I can catch.
I can tackle. I can read
receivers.”
