; what they considered the best alternative to
j what we presently had
‘ Guidelines that the committee operated
; under were geography, size of the confer
: ~ence; and not letting schools play down.
If a school opted to play down, it would
lose all privileges in the following sports
; football, basketball, baseball and softball.
However, the committee could place a
school down if the geography deemed it
necessary.
West Brunswick and Avery County were
; allowed to play 2A.
Versatil _ To Embark On Different Paths
By James Orthbertsoo
Post Sports Writer
The Springs’ twins,
Herman and Sherman,
have always been very
close.
Next year, however, they
will begin ~lo embark on
different paths.
"We have decided that
we are going to have
different roomates when
we go to college next
year,’; said Sherman, the
older of the two by mere
minutes.
"We have always
roomed together," added
Herman. "We decided to
branch out a little and to
see how other roomates
are.”
Herman and SlMggfi&n
are different in: a lot of
ways. They don’t dress
alike and if one didn’t know
they were twins, you might
think that they were just
brothers.
Herman, the younger
looking of the two, is 6-2,
180 pounds.
I
Herman Springs
Sherman is 5-11, 193
pounds.
Hut in one
important way, they are
alike. _
Athletic Ability!
Although excelling in
different sports at different
times, they both managed
to attract Mel “Big Daddy”
Rose’s attention at
Livingstone College and he
came to Charlotte with pen
in hand to sign them to
football scholarships for
the Blue Bears and to tell
them to— enjoy their
summer because on August
7th when they report to the
Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association camp
it will be time to get down
to business.
The native Charlotteans
were born March 5,1966 to
Mr. and Mrs. Herman
Springs and have lived
most of their lives in the
Nations Ford Road
community of Springfield.
They started athletics
early,playing baseball and
football for Brnarimnnr
-when they were seven
years old.
“ We^were always bigfor
our ages,” Herman said.
“They wouldn’t let us play
with the little boys. We had
to play with the big ones."
One of the highlights of
their early athletic career
yf came when the Broadmoor
13 year old Babe Ruth team
went to the national
' playoffs in Tennessee.
' Sherman was the shortstop
and Herman* who didn’t
play that year'.was the bat;
boy.
In seventh grade at Quail

In ninth grade Sherman
was the most valuable
player in baseball,
pitching. playing third, . *
hitting five home runs and
leading his team to second
place in the conference
In 10th grade, the twins
moved to Olympic High
School where Herman was
the most valuable player
on the junior varsity
football team from his
defensive back position
where ha “elligllt tht
interceptions and rushed
for 500 punt return yards.
Sherman was the captain
of the football team.
In basketball, Herman
moved up during the 10th
game of the season and
helped to lead the varsity to
a state quarterfinal
appearance at Catawba
College where they lost to
eventual finalist Chapel
mil High School.
Herman averaged 18 on
the junior varsity before he
moved up and finished with
an average of 14 per game
