ern (Rock Hill, SC), was
sponsored by the National
Organization of Black
Chemists and Chemical
Engineers (NOBCChE)
and the local affiliate, Me
tropolitan Charlotte Chap
ter (MC-M-2). The presi
dent of the local chapter,
Dr. Bobby Dawkins ex
plained Portia was among
approximately 600 high
school students throughout
the country participating in
the week-long workshop.
He added, “The session
is designed to allow the
nation's most outstanding
students the opportunity to
utilize the extensive en
gineering and science la
boratory and classroom fa
cilities at the Naval

kins, MC++2 participates
in career workshops at
Johnson C. Smith Univer
sity; elects students to
spend the day with che
mists at their companies to
give the student a first
hand look at an engineer’s
responsibilities. The mem
bers also present science
demonstrations at school
assemblies.

Dr. Dawkins emphasized
NOBCChE isn’t open solely
to scientists and engin

stated.
