Fa.te.| Cmmitm Cimtmtuiin Uerkh ' ' _ Thursday, July 12. 19S4 - THE CHARLOTTE POST - Page IB Auxtit Judges’ Decision For Grand Prize! Harris Are Contest Winners! % By Loretta Manago Post Staff Writer For the past six weeks, church women from different denomin ations throughout the city have competed in Hie Charlotte Post’s “Churchwoman of the Year” contest. Each week the contestants and their committee members have made contact with their club associates, ‘ church families, friends, and co-workers in an effort to help boost The Charlotte' Post’s circulation. Now that the contest has end ed, Verona Vaughn of Gethse Church and Hattie Harris of Chappell Memorial Baptist Church wait until the night of— the Churchwoman banquet to find out which grand prize they have won. '> The prizes that are up for grabs are a $500 food certificate from Winn-Dixie, a mink stole valued at $1,500 donated by the Vintage Girl and an Air-Sea Cruise to the Bahamas courtesy of Eastern Airlines. In order for the previously mentioned contestants to qualify for these prizes, each of them had to capture the first place slot in their respective category. They did this by selling the top number of subscriptions. Having reached this plateau in the contest, the three final con testants are no longer bound by the amount of sales as a qua lifying factor for winning the three grand prizes. What will determine who will van the trip, the shopping spree or the fur coat is the letter that is to be written by each finalist’s pastor. The contents of those letters, which will include strong statements in support of a candi date’s nomination for “Church woman of the Year,” will be determined by a selected panel 1----I Mattie Caldwell I—---—-. Willie Dae Verona Vaughn Hattie Harris of judges. No one who will walk away with either of the three prizes will be losers. With such lu xurious gifts to be given away, it can be very readily said that each candidate through her per severance of the contest and her commitment to the contest is already a winner. This week, the prizes of a $25 gift certificate from Chez Mar jetie, a $25 gift certificate from Peak’s Drugs and a cue stick from Pro Play were won by Verona Vaughn, Mattie Caldwell and Ella Talley, respectively. Matt Snorton, vice president of the First National Bank of Chi cago, will be the keynote speaker at the banquet, Friday, July 27, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel, 1-77 and Tyvola Rd. Tickets are $25 a piece. With The Charlotte Post “Churchwoman qf ‘-the Year” contest ending, the spotlight has focused on the three category winners- Verona Vaughn, Mattie Caldwell and Hattie Harris. However three other equally deserving women in the contest deserve merit- Delores Reid of St. Luke Baptist Church, Willie Dae of Gethsemane Baptist Church, and Florence Harrison of Matthews-Murkland Presby terian Church. .
