Smith Uni versity head coach Horace Small will get a taste of what it felt for Daniel to be thrown into the lion’s den when the Golden Bulls travel to Richmond, Va., to take on the two time defending CIAA champions, Virginia Union, on Saturday, Sep tember i. The Panthers will be primed as Joe Taylor takes over as the new Virginia Union head coach from the super successful Willard Bailey (106-32-4) who moved to his alma mater,‘Norfolk State. Taylor is a former Panther assistant who gave up the head coaching job at Howard to be able to return to Virginia Union. The Panthers are heavily favored to take the CIAA Northern Divi sion title with 16 starters back from 1983 s 10-2 squad. Pendergrass was 6-3 in regular season play.' The veteran Giants manager is looking to second baseman Michael Forney, third baseman Vic White and left fielder Fred Petty to fur nish the offense for his team. Each was outstanding last week. Forney clouted three singles and a double while White wee hitting three singles and Petty a homerun and a single. The championship contest will be held Sunday afternoon, starting at 3 o'clock. The opponents will be de cided after play on Saturday. The 6'3”, 320 pound junior from East Orange, NJ, will be a key in springing speed sters Darrel Wesley and Jeff East erling on the outside. Wide receiver Shelton Johnson (6’3“, 190 pounds) has returned to school after a year layoff to bolster a capable receiving corp led by sophomore Tracey Gainey and Leon Shipp. "W’e're on schedule and generally pleased with our ability to move the ball so far,” assessed Small. The Panther defense, ranked num ber one in the C1AA and the NCAA II last year, will present a formid able challenge for the Bulls with eight starters back. Last year, Union prevailed 14-0 in Charlotte, turning away Smith three times in the second half. Taylor has been noted in Rich mond as not planning to tamper with the highly successful Panther ma chine. Union operates out of the wing T offense and generally shows eight men up front on defense when not running a 4-3. “The championships will continue" is the 1984 Panther motto. Union has won four CIAA crowns the past five years and has been invited to the NCAA II play offs the same number of times. Kickoff at Hovey Field on Union’s campus will be 8 p.m. Saturday.
