CHS To Form Support Group For Patients With ALS Community Health Ser vice, a United Way Agencyinterested -in forming a support group for patients with amy tropic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and their families, according to a recent press release from the service, located at 1401 East 7th St. as -ALSeJfcj. progressive, degenerative disease affecting nerves and mus cles. To date there is no known cause or cure. ALS is commonly known as the Lou Gehrig’s disease. People between the ages of 40 and 70 years are usually affected by the dis ease. Men are twice as often affected as women and there are approximate ly two cases of ALS per 100,000 population. Symptons of the disease include muscle weakness, which leads to difficulties 'with'walking,'talking;" ‘ chewing, swallowing and eventually breathing. It does not affect the mind and the victim remains mentally alert while the physical body deteriorates. The ALS victim and his family must deal with many physical and emo tional adjustments.
