LEADS CONFERENCE Walter •Chip" Hand leads the Cl A A in pant return* after three games honor* in I M3 and he is the fastest player on the Fighting Bears*" football team. __ ■ Fayetteville State Boasts “tittle Bigman” Special To The Pott Fayetteville - When you think of linemen in football you usually think of big bulky men with muscles on top of muscles, who line up during the course of a game and try to use their brute strength and size to move ah opponent out of the way. It is a position where only the big and strong survive, right? Well, at Fayetteville State Uni versity there is one exception. In stead of boasting one of those bulky linemen, they boast the smallest lineman in the conference. He is 5’10”, 190 pound center Steve Arm strong. Steve, a 21 year old senior Business major out of Richmond, Va., may be the smallest lineman at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic ■ .... Association (CIAA), but he also ranks at the top at his position. Aside from being tagged the “smallest lineman” in the confe rence, he is also dubbed the "dirtiest” by announcers and coun terparts throughout the CIAA. “I don’t consider myself a dirty Dlayer, although I have been called that by many people, some just kidding and some quite serious,” said Steve. “In all honesty I con sider myself an aggressive player who goes until the whistle is blown. To some that may look dirty, to me its just hustle.” And aggressive ness and hustle are good adjectives to describe Steve. During the game he can be seen giving that extra effort, getting another block, and making sure his presence is known on the field. You might wonder how Steve might prepare himself to go against men who usually outweigh him by 30 to 40 pounds? “I don't really do anything special to prepare for opponents that are usually larger than myself," Steve said. “I just try to use what I have been taught by my coaches over the years. Also, I try to be more aggressive than my opponents." To Steve, being small has its advantages. Since he Is smaller than opponents, he is usually quicker, and knowing that he is smaller makes him play that much harder.
