School Violence? There Is More To It Than Meets
. Special TO The Pott
“'School violence. There’s more to
it than meets the eye.’ That is the
message of the National School
Safety Center," announced George
Nicholson, the Center’s Director and
Chief Counsel, as America's
children return to school throughout
the country.
The Center, a partnership of the
U.S. Departments of Justice and
Education with California's Pepper
dine University, is funded by a $3.95
million, two-year federal grant to
I . ' -
promote school safety and student
. 'attendance in all 90 states and the
District of Columbia.
“The Center is the national bead
quarters of, America’s new
systematic effort to coalesce public,
, private and academic resources to
help reduce campus crime and
violence, and encourage a positive
educational climate. It also provides
a central clearinghouse on school
safety and student attendance
information and programs for
, educators, lawyers, judges, law
enforcers and the public,” added
Nicholson. '
“The Center will promote inter
agency cooperation and networking ;
file amicus curiae (friend of the
court) briefs ip carefully selected
cases in state and federal appeals
courts; conduct legal and legislative
research; sponsor training
conferences; prepare and distribute
publications and multimedia
resources; and conduct a nationwide
public service advertising campaign
called National School Watch,"
declared Nicholson.
“One of the Center’s most ef
fective communications tools is
“School Safety," which is a news
journal published three times each
school year and distributed to 80,000
lawyers, judges, law enforcers, and
other key state and national lead
en," asserted Nicholson.
“The cover of the premiere issue
of “School Safety," published to
coincide with the beginning of this
school year," said Nicholson,
“displays Norman Rockwell’s
famous painting, ‘The Shiner,’
which depicts a school girl sporting'
a black eye as she waits outside the
principal’s office. The same paint
ing, includes the Center’s mes
sage, ‘School violence. There’s more
to it than meets the eye.’ is to be the
key theme in National School
Watch.’’
