ABC’s stock zoomed skywards after the announcement
of Howard Cosell’s retirement. Monday night football has
gained in the TV ratings.
Remember Gene Baker, the fine secondbaseman of
several years back? The former Pittsburgh star is now a
Pirate scout. He will manage a Pirate team in the
instructional League this winter.
Franco Harris, who refused a reported $557,000 a year to
play for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is now carrying the
football for the Seattle Seahawks for a mere $375,000 per
season. What’s a good word for that? "
USFL football star Herschel Walker has contributed
$100,000 for the Butts-Heritage Building on the University
of Georgia campus...Look for the big schools to challenge
in court a recent ruling by the Internal Revenue Service
which says contributions to university foundations and
booster groups cannot be tax deductible if the contri
butions are tied to preferential ticket distribution for the
college’s football games.
If enforced, the new rule would drastically hurt college
athletic programs.
ESPN is riding a new high rating with its weekend
college football games.
If Dwight Gooden does not win the National League’s
Most Valuable Player award, league officials who had a
hand in the voting should be hauled off to the land of no
return. The New York Mets rookie’s stats are un
believable.
Now that Ted Turner has ditched Joe Torre, will Torre’s
sidekick Bob Gibson be the next Atlanta Brave to get the
ax? My guess is that he will be released and Johnny Sain
will be hired as the team’s pitching coach before next
season.
Detroit and Chicago are my choices for advancing to the
World Series. Detroit will, win it all! A knee injury has
sidelined Norfolk State’s star runningback Marvin Brown
for the rest of the season.
Word oirtruf Fayetteville is that Bronco’s runningback.
Benjamin Knox is the best in the CIAA. Last week’s CIAA
statistics support the claim. The flashy sophomore is
averaging 148 yards rushing per game, with 296 yards for
31 totes in his first two contests. He leads the league in
individual rushing and is second in total offense.
_As a team, the surprising Rmnrnc lending the.
conference in rushing and in team total offense. Adrain
Wright, Virginia Union’s ponderous 250-pound fullback,
who ran wUd against J.C. Smith, has been collared in his
last three appearances. Wright currently ranks seventh
among the top CIAA running backs, but he’s third in
scoring offense with four touchdowns.
If North Carolina Central loses out in the chase for the
Southern Division title, give all the credit to Hampton. The
Pirates knocked the Eagles out of serious contention with
the 17-13 victory they tacked on North Carolina Central,
thereby removing all chances the Eagles had for over
taking Winston-Salem State down the home stretch.

History was quietly made on TV in early September
when Bill Wilkerson became the first black play-by- i

Aside to those who say Lefty Driesell of Maryland
cannot coach: Statistics dictate otherwise. Lefty has won
480 contests in 24 years with only 198 defeats for a lofty .708 i

Top MEAC officials were stunned recently upon learning
that Morgan State has not renewed its contract with
basketball coach Billy Newton....Bill Davis, who received
A-huge pay raise, believes (be 1984 South Carolina State
football team will be his best ever.
If one is to believe Tom Landry Tony Dorsett is the
centerpiece of the Dallas offense. One of the games
greatest running backs, Dorsett is approaching 10,000
career rushing yards.
HOW DO YOU LIKE THIS ONE? New York Yankees’
manager Yogi Berra praises his ex-teammate Mickey
Mantel as being "naturally amphibious” because of his
ability to hit from both sides of the plate. Wonder if he
meant "ambidextrous?”
College football has become big business. CBS and ABC
will pay $68.8 million for the right to televise 28 games this
season and ESPN is going to shell out another $5.5 million
for 14 prime-time cablecasts.
Are you wondering why the popular Los Angeles
Dodgers are faring so poorly in the National League West
race? It’s because they have been beset with a suc
cession of injuries to key players. Manager Tom Lasorda
has used 71 lineup combinations to date.

SCSC Marching Band Prime
For Dynamite Show!
By Phil Bother
Special To The Pool
They will be arriving at Charlotte
Manorial Stadium Saturday night
150 strong. Capable of an awesome
ground attack, this team runs pat
terns and executes maneuvers with
military precision. Few colleges in
the nation like to match-up against
this outfit Everywhere they go even
opponent fans accord them tremen
dous respect and appreciation for
their considerable skills. South
Carolina State’s Marching Band
should charge double the price of
admission for the dynamite show
they put on!
The Bulldogs football team will
also be here. Bill Davis’ squad is in
the middle of their toughest sched
ule in years while trying to rebuild.
-The unlikely results so far is a
Bulldog team that is 2-3 and has
surrendered 28 points per game.
After last week’s 41-7 thrashing at
the hands of undefeated Alcorn
State, SCSC will arrive in Charlotte
in a mood to unload a lot of
frustration.
Don’t be deceived by the record.
The 1984 Bulldogs team is more than
capable of burning out the score
board lights at Memorial Stadium.
After 10 straight MEAC titles, it
appears that Delaware State will
wrestle the crown away from SCSC.
With only one conference loss, State
still has a prayer, but losing any
more games in 1984 will not help
their cause.
The Bulldogs are led by sopho
more quarterback Charles Glaze
who leads the team in rushing with
275 yards and is the top passer in the
MEAC. His favorite target is David
Lee Norman who has made 24
catches for 375 yards and six TDs.

Conference Came Up Empty Handed
Against Two Outside Opponents
This was not a week for major
upsets, but in non-conference action
it was a donut weekend; not gaining
a victory at all outside the con
ference.
The defending conference cham
pions, Virginia Union, enjoyed
homecoming as they stopped
mistake prone St. Paul's, 28-7. St.
Paul’s finished the day with two lost
fumbles and four interceptions. Se
nior tailback, Brian Smith finished
the day with 151 yards on 14 carries,
a 10.8 yard per carry average which
helped Virginia Union out-rush the
visiting Tigers, 255 to 109 yards.
Virginia State amazed Elizabeth
City with six interceptions and five
quarterback sacks in stopping the
Vikings, 23-8. Three of the six in
terceptions were returned for scores
in the first half,'as the Trojans took a
23-0 -4ea4 into -the lockor - room.
Virginia State’s victory broke an
Elizabeth City jinx, that dated back
to the 1979 season.
N. C. Central squeaked by Fay
etteville St., 24-22, in a game that
was not decided until the last three
seconds of the game. Freshman
quarterback, Calvin Davis complet
ed a 44 yard TD strike to Robert
Clark with three seconds left to give
the Eagles the victory. Fayette
ville’s Ben Knox finished the day
with 119 yards on 28 carries. If you
can remember, Fayetteville had
Virginia Union beat in their season
opener, but a touchdown with
eight seconds left stopped the
Broncos from a major upset. That
game finished in a 22-22 tie. The
Broncos are seconds away from
being in first place of the Southern
Division.
Norfolk State won its fourth game
in a row, blanking Bowie State. 38-0.
The Spartans surprisingly only led
Bowie 3-0 at the half, but took control
st the start of the second half.
Norfolk finished the day with a
school record of 426 yards on the
ground. Defensively, the Spartans
held Bowie to a -56 yards on the
ground.
In non-conference action, N.C.
A AT stopped J.C. Smith, 16-6. JoJo
White was held to a career low of 13
yards on 12 carries, as Livingstone
was stopped by Gardner Webb,
38-10.

UPCOMING BRIEFS
There are only two games this
week that will count In the divi
sional championship races. Fay
etteville 8t. will be looking for a
much needed conference victory as
they travel to winleas Bowie St.
Winston-Salem will return to
action, after a week layoff, as they
travel to division rival Llvingatene
College. This it an important
game for the Beers, because they
have yet to win a conference game.
A Livingstone victory would really
make things interesting in the South.
N.C. Central will take on the red
hot Norfolk St. Spartans in Norfolk,
VA. This game will not count in the
conference standings for either
team. But regardless of that fact,
this could be a Mg game for the
Spartans at they try to stay uiv
beaten.
In non-conference action, Elisa
beth CKy will travel to N.C. AST.
Hampton University will play host to
the University of District of Colum
bia, J.C. Smith will entertain South
Carolina St., and Virginia Union will
travel to Kentucky St.
NOTES & “QUOTES”
.For the second week in a row,
the CIAA game came up empty
handed against outside opponents.
The non-conference won-lost record
dropped to 4-7. N.C. AfcT topped J.C.
Smith, 16-6 and Gardner Webb
trounced Livingstone, 38-10. Against
Division I-AA opponents, the CIAA,
a Division II conference, is 2-2.
.Jo Jo White (LC) slowed up his
race to the CIAA’s career rushing
top, as he was held to a career low of
13 yards on 12 carries. Presently, he
is 406 yards away from Timmy
Newsome’s record of 3,843 yards
White has 3,437 career rushing
yards. He is presently number

few more to add to his total of four on
the year. DB Larry Nesmith is
SCSC’s leading tackier with 52 hits
so far. Defense has been the
Achilles heal of State.
While the Golden Bulls played well
in Orangeburg last year, dropping a
23-14 decision, the going will be
tougher at Memorial Stadium*Satur
day night Reserve quarterback
Wendell Dixon rallied Smith for its
only score against N.C. A&T and
