CKurcH News Briefs Dr. Marshall Strickland To Lead Gethsemane AME Zion Church Revival By Teresa Simmons Post Managing Editor Revival at Gethsemane AME Zion Church, 531 Campus St., will be one of exhortation of the Word. Special guest speaker during the week of November 4 9 will be Dr. Marshall H. Strickland. On Sunday at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. during the week. Dr. Strickland will bring inspirational messages. Ac cording to Rev. Dr. George E. Rattle Jr., pastor of the church, the church doors will be open to anyone who wishes to partake in the reve lations. A deeply spiritual individual, Dr. Strickland preached his first sermon at the age on nine, and was or dained as a deacon at the age of 14. He also served as a student minister at Hcjgan Chapel AME Zion Church in Salisbury while attending Livingstone College. He graduated with honors and later received his M.A. degree from Howard Univer sity in Washington, D.C. In 1979 he received an honorary degree of TJoctor of Divinity from Livingstone College. He has also completed a Doctorate of Ministry degree and the requirements for a Ph.D. at St. Mary’s Seminary. t'resenuy ur. smcKiana is pastor Of Pennsylvania Avenue Church. Within five years of taking this position he has led the congregation with the_power of Gpd, to complete the New PennsylvanTa Aveftue— Church and Zion Towers Complex. The new church was dedicated in 1977 under Bishop Charles H. Foggie. Dr. Strickland has developed the Radio Outreach Ministry designed for shut-in members and the com munity; the self-help food co-op; and Arts and Crafts program for senior citizens. He also organized God's Storehouse - making food and clothing available to persons in need; an income preparation ser vice; a Kwanza Festival at Christ mas; Health Fairs and Youth Witnessing Programs. In the ministry that has covered the East Coast from Alabama to Maryland with lectures and sermons offered also in several European countries, it is generally believed that God has prepared Dr. Strick land for great responsibilities in the realm of His service. Also on the program will be the Davidson College Gospel Choir. Rev. G. Sidney Waddell, pastor. GREATER MT. SINAI An exciting day occurred for the congregation of Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church recently in addition to the church's annual revivial week kick-off, it was nlso Men’s bay and Women’s Day celebration. The men of the church were responsible for the entire worship service. In keeping with tradition the selection of “Man of the Year" was the climax of the morning. This year’s honoree is the young Norman E. Kerry Jr., assistant pastor of Greater Mt Sinai. Not quite 20 years of age. (born on Christmas Day), Rev. Kerry Jr. exhibits the leadership qualities that the ideal “Man of the Year” should possess From an early age Norman has made his statement in church, — - Kev. W. II. Just a few of the activities he has been involved in include: Student Coun cil, Who’s Who Among Christian Students, and he was a reporter for the Open Newsletter in high school. In college he found time to hold two offices: one in the Ministers’ Lyceum and the other in the Circle K Club. What was to be his second year at Bishop College in Dallas, TX, proved to be one that he unselfish ly devoted to his parents during tMk illness of MS'father. The congregation from the church recognize Norman Kerry Jr. as he continues to uphold his title and exhibit those needed characteristics as “Man of the Year.” They also pray for the speedy recovery of his father, Rev.
