Chosen “Prihcipal
Of The Year”
Robert A. Clendenin of Greens
boro and Alexander Erwin of
Wilkesboro were honored here last
night as the first Wachovia “Prin
cipals of the Year,” an award
presented to the state’s most out
standing public high school prin
cipals.
Clendenin, principal at Walter
Hines Page Senior High School, and
Erwin, principal at Wilkes Central
Senior High School, were presented
awards of $1,000 for the purchase of
educational materials and equip
ment for their schools and $1,000 for
personal or professional use.
The awards program is sponsored
by Wachovia Bank and Trust and the
North Carolina Department of Pu
blic Instruction. It was created to
recognize the principals who “cre
ate an environment in which edu
cation thrives and young men and
women are challenged to achieve
their fullest potential.’’
John F. McNair III, vice chair
man of Wachovia, commended the
principals for the "investment of
time and talent and energy” which
they put into their roles^-We believe
that effective principals are the key
to achieving maximum return on the
vast potential represented by the
young people of our state and
nation,” he told the group attend
ing the opening night of the North
Carolina Association of School Ad
ministrators fall conference.
Clendenin was cited for several
programs instituted at Page High
School, including an attendance
monitoring system with computer
initiated calls to students’ homes
which resulted in a nfgntfteant
SSSRMS3SS.3K,
parents; and internships in city
service agencies.
Erwin was recognized by the
selection committee for programs
developed to establish rapport with
students, parents, teachers and the
community. These programs in
clude a meeting for each incoming
student, the student’s parents, the
director of instruction and a coun
selor; and the "mentor program”
for college-bound students.
Six other principals who were
named principal of the year for their
regions were also recognized at the
meeting; J. Robert Boyce, John A. i
Holmes High School, Edenton- Pa
trick Best, Goldsboro High School,
Goldsboro; Richard M. Jewell,
Broughton High School, Raleigh;
George W. Sea graves, Lee County
Senior High, Sanford; Robert H.
Bellamy, Monroe High School,
Monroe; and Larry R. Liggett,
Asheville High School, Asheville.
They each received a check for $750
to be used for the purchase of
educational materials or equipment
for their schools.
The regional winners were select
ed from among 35 principals
nominated by their local school
systems.

fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fra
ternity, Inc., will observe its an
nual Founder’s Day on Friday,
December 7, commencing at 7 p m.
at McDonald’s Cafeteria on Beat

The Rev. Clifford Jones, pastor of
Friendship Baptist Church, will be
the speaker for the evening. Re
