By Sherman N. Miller A brief discussion with a few corporate black man agers and professionals re vealed that these people are the vanguard of a new black American conserva tive class. The conserva tive tenor of all of my corporate black friends told me that the current repugnanoe.^tplay^by financial suicide for these organizations. Only one person admitted to contri buting to civil rights or ganizations, yet this person does not participate in theif activities. Every one, however, agreed that the civil rights organiza tions were not pursuing 1960s’ socio-economic parity objectives. I believe the civil rights organizations may be making a gross strategic market definition error similar tp the ratiroad industry. The railroads foiled to recognize that they were in the transport ation business, and should have purchased truck and airplane fleets to evolve naturally with the transportation market. However, the railroads’ failure to clearly define their business afforded the truck and airline industries the opportunity to develop large enough share in the transportation market to force some at them into bankruptcy. This ill-fated railroad scenario makes me conclude that the true goal at the civil rights organizations is socio economic parity. My friends went On to say > that when the civil rights battles were won, no one brought forth dear programs to fight for economic rights. These blacks contended that the civil rights leadership is demoastratlag little knowledge on how things get done in the corporate flatting. However, they expressed the need for a forum palatable to their present work environment. Conservatives usually ten Tou-pretty quickly where you stand. My corporate black associates burned my ears with a massage for the dvil rights leadership: -Develop a conserva tive forum where corporate blacks and whites feel welcome. - -Get involved in broad issues that have indirect impact on th»*i>lack community. -Do not remain so wedded to the liberal doctrine that you preclude any assistance from conservatives. —Hold strategic planning sessions on economic issues. -Bring people with business expertise into the forefront. -Do not permit one political party to totally dominate the-organiza tion’s philosophical stance. -Get dedicated people who do not have a vested interest politically to chair committees. I feel that corporate blacks do recognize the importance of the civfl rights organizations’ presence and that they owe their success to the sac rifices and sufferings of otner black Americans. However, the high calibre blacks entering the corporate world today are dispelling the stereotypic myth ot the black remedial employe*. These people can be expected to adopt the culture of Mainstream Corporate America so the gap with the civil rights organizations can only broaden without some serious reassessment of • COUNSELING • CONSULTATION • TRAINING •Individual •Marriage Parent-Child Counseling •Carole H Hicks. Will the black civil rights leadership learn to embrace the conservative doctrine or shall they choose to slip into oblivion because they are recalcit rant to adopting the full breadth of socio-economic parity?
