The Johnson C. Smith
University Choir, under the
direction of Music Profes
sor Christopher W. Kemp,
will present the 35th annual
Christmas Vesper Service
an Sunday, December 2, at
S' p.ra. in the Jane Desiy
Smith Memorial Church on
campus.
A Christmas organ
recital by Joanne Harrison,
organist at Qetfasemane
AME Zion Church, will
precede the performance
at 4t20jMn.
Joining the festivities
will be the 175 member
Friends of Johnson C.
Smith University who will
host a reception after the
concert in the Grimes
Lounge st the Student
Union Center.

beautiful performances
each year that we an
excited about extending the
warmth and good will
generated into a~
community social affair,”
remarked Friends
coefaairperson Elizabeth
Randolph. The
performance and reception
are open free to the public.
Accompanists include
Cheryl Brady.Rogtna Peas
'and Betty Walker along
with JCSU band director
Freddie Holt who will
perform as trumpeter.
“Our purpose is to
express the mood and spirit
surrounding the
celebration of Christ's
birth,” emphasized Kemp.
The performance's
feeling is heightened by the
candlelight service as if the

Rev. J.B. Humphrey,
pastor of First Baptist
Church, will read “The
Christmas Lesson" from
St. Luke 2:1-14.
Choir selections will
include: “Gesu Bambino”
(Pietro A. Yon); “Gloria”
(Wolfgang Mozart);
“Praise to tbe Lord” (Hugo

audience will also be in
vited to join in on “O Come,
AO Ye Faithful,” “Joy To
the World,” “Gloria” and
excerpts from “The
Messiah.” .
Work for the perfor
mance began last
September. Forty-three
students will be involved in
the choir.
A vesper is traditionally
a late afternoon or evening
prayer or psalm session. In
his 35 years of directing the
performances, Kemp has
remained true to the
tradition of featuring
