- Adoption— -
Con tinned From Page IA
at that number, only 25 percent
decide to give their babies up for
adoption. Lost year we placed 1«
infants with families Thirty-nine
percent at those infants were
minorities. This year we have ap
proved 8# black couples for adop
tion.” These bleak statistics give
credence to the fact that there just
aren't enough ha hies to go around.
Bass cited that the ris* of single
parents and abortion as two factors
contributing to the decline of infanta
. -available far adoption, plus Ua
ag«»ey does not pUBh adoption to Its
pregnant teens.
"When you tell someone you’re
adapting a child, then it's pro
jected as being a positive move. But
society still looks negatively when a
woman decides to give her hum up,
even if it is the best thing for the
mother and the child."
Once a mother has rnmA* her
decision to elect adoption, the child
is placed in a Family Care Home
licensed by. The Children’s Home
Society. Tbs mother then has SO
days to change her mind. Durii«
those SO days, the child is being
evaluated far his or her overall
physical, emotional and mental
well-being. Once those SO days are
family that has been carefully
in© screening ot prospective
parents for infants is basically the
satne kind at process that occurs
with older children and ‘siblings.
Where the difference cooes in is
with black couples and white
couples. ... ..
For a white couple that la being
_ considered for an infant, the mother
has to stay home, not so for a black
mother. She can work. The income
levels are a lot more flexible in the
black couple’s household than in the
white couple’s. A white couple has
to have a doctor’s note stating that
they cannot have children; this is
not necessary in the blade family.
Such disparities may seem discrim
inatory, but Bass assured that such
differences are inevitable when
there are so many black children
waiting to be placed with fami
lies. There are even adoption sub
sidies and foster care payments for
some adoption cases.
Although the agency requires that
a couple be married in order to
adopt an infant, single persons In
terested in adopting are eligible to
adopt an older child
Explaining the agency’s pro
cedure for initiating an adoption
case, Bass said that a simple call to
The Children's Home Society will
precede an application being sent to
the interested party, afterwards, an
interview, and time spent with the
prospective parents are other steps
that follow.
ii mere are no prooiems and If
there is a child to flt the de
scription of an applicant, an adop
tion can take place in a matter of a
few months. For a couple wanting a
baby, however, the entire procedure
can take up to two years or more,”
said Bass. Barn strongly feels that
in spite of a. child's problems it is Ms
or her inherent right to have a
family.
In addition to placing children,
The Children’s Home Society is s
direct contact for persona experi
encing the adjustments to
an adoption. “We stay in touch with
families and provide counseling if
necessary.’’ Pregnant teenagers
who decide to keep their babtes also
receive help from The Children’s
Home Society by learning ways of
making their individual situations
work.
Located at 301 S. Brevard St., the
agency’s number is 334-2804
