I i. CHATTER 1 -- The hot and heavy Southwestern 4A Conference basketball season is underway and already there have been some surprises. Garinger, last week’s number one team, has already tumbled and has been replaced by the hottest team in the conference this week. THE RANKINGS 1. NORTH MECKLENBURG - The Vikings have emerged as the hottest team in the conference. They are getting good mileage from Letura Stitt, Todd Holden, Rodney Sims and Lee Clark and begin the season where they ended last year, at the top. 2. WEST CHARLOTTE - The Lions have more talent than anyone else in the conference. They have good height and good shooters in Kevin' Reid, Maurice Caldwell, Horace Small, Lance Jones, Ravon Currence, and Michael .Cure tom— -: • ~_• 3. GARINGER - Maybe the loss to North was a fluke. The big men are producing for the Wildcats, but depth looks like it will be a problem for the talented team_”_ 4. OLYMPIC - Last week’s hottest team in the conference, the Trojans beat the West Mecklenburg Indians on the road and showed a mark of success they haven’t shown lately, winnfng on the road. With Antonio Howard^being a hot shot and a great supporting staff in Dwayne Glenn, Donald Simmons, and Larmar Simond, the Trojans could be the conference dark horse. 5. HARDING - The Rams, led by Anthony Houston, J.D. Cauthen and Lonnie Tucker, are doing something they didn’t do last year - putting points on the boards. The Rams are tough. Houston is probably one of the con ference’s better junior basketball players. Look for great things from the young man who is averaging 16 points per game. * . - 6. WEST MECKLENBURG - As long as Milton Moore is hot, the Indians can stick it to anyone in the' con ference. This looks like it will be a good season for the young man with the fade away jumpers from the comers. 7. MYERS PARK - The Mustangs won' the league last -year and could do it again hut it won’t he as easy as last year. 8. INDEPENDENCE - As soon as the Patriots get their full squad back, they will be tough. • 9. EAST MECKLENBURG - It may be a long year for the Eagles. Byron Dinkins is one heck of a shooter. 10. SOUTH MECKLENBURG - The Sabres are a very -vnunp and inexperienced team.__ THE GIRLS 1. NORTH MECKLENBURG - Andrea Stinson, 5-8, is the hottest prospect in the. area. She should keep the Vikings L near the top of the conference. 2. HARDING - The Rams are tough this season. 3. OLYMPIC - The Trojans, led by Veronica Harris and Judy Graham, could challenge for top honors. 4. WEST MECKLENBURG - AS long as the Indians have Lori Helton, they are dangerous. ' 5. SOUTH MECKLENBURG - Renee Emerson and Mia Nance are top guns for the Sabres, who Upset West Charlotte. 6. WEST CHARLOTTE - The Lions are led by Tuwanda Smith and Marla Walker. 7. When Moore is having a good game, the Indians, whose support ing cast includes good talent in center Carrol Raley, forward John White, forward guard Eric Tri vette, and guards Derrick McGowan and Deron Davis, could be dan gerous and most assuredly will improve last season’s record. “I am beginning to feel really confident about my games,” said Moore, who rightfully should after hitting from all areas of the court in the Gastonia gym. With 11 from the floor and eight from the line, the 6-3, 175 pounder looks like a major college Division I prospect all the way. “I feel I need to take charge and make things happen on the floor,” he said. Last year, coach John Day had nothing but accolades on the atti tude of Moore and how much he meant to the team. Moore had * 17 points per game average last year.
