TELLING IT LIKE IT REALLY IS! . AH things come to him who waits —but "him” better be working while he’s waiting! One of the most highly respected men in college coaching ranks passed lask week. The beloved Howard K. “Brutus" Wilson, who spent long years teaching and coaching at Shaw and Winston-Salem State, was eulogized in Smithfield Saturday. “Coach” touched the lives of many during his career, which began in 1934. He retired in 1978. His name is etched in the record books along side two of the nation’s longest winning streaks. He master-minded Morgan State to a string of 54 victories in football and he led his basketball team to 47 consecutive triumphs. The injury-plagued New York Knicks have signed 7T" center Ran Cavenall. The former Texas Southern stand out was performing with the Harlem Globetrotters. Rumors out of Norfolk are that Norfolk State is about ready to pull up stakes and leave the CIAA to join the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.. .Look for Terry Brad shaw to replace Phyllis George on the "NFL Today” show...The former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback likely will get the official word before the playoffs begin a week from Sunday. The drug problem among professional athletes continue to worsen. Houston has sidelined hot-shooting John Lucas and the Utah Jazz this week waived high-scoring John Drew for drug-related problems. The Jazz has arranged for Drew to enter a drug treatment facility. The showdown between Georgetown and DePaul, scheduled for Saturday afternoon, has the country’s college basketball fans up in the air. Early odds have Georgetown favored by 10M> points. WBTV will carry the contest, beginning at 3:45 p.m. TV ratings are expected to go through the roof. Howard Cosell has no effect on the low ratings that Monday night football is currently receiving. According to a poll concluded last week, 59 percent of the pro football fans who watched the game on television said they have not missed Howard. Neither have L Do you realize that Eric Dickerson has run the length of the football fields more than 20 times this season? Add it up! The big Los Angeles Ram has rushed lor 2,003 yards in 14 contests for an average of 143 yards an outing. That’s 20 times the length of the gridiron! Barry Cooper, the outstanding young sports writer from down Florida way, asks: “Should black schools leave Division 1-AA?” Cooper believes, and I agree, that when the 12 predominantly black colleges and universities - “eagerly gave up their Division 11 membership, the real lure was not the prospect of competing ih a new league, but the possibility of getting rich, from TV recipts.” It didn’t happen in the early years, although several of the schools did reap a good harvest. However, it’s crystal clear now that black colleges will hot receive the big dollars from network television anymore. Florida A&M, one of the teams that drew several big checks, is currently faced with a $400,000 deficit and A&T just recently asked its board of trustees for an increase in student ath letic fees, saying it sorely needs the more than $100,000 the increase would generate. Most of the 12 schools are confronted with a deficit in their athletic departments. If Ken Free and Dr. James Frank are really serious about the CIAA getting involved in the second Freedom Bowl All-Star Classic, it seems to me they would name Willard Bailey of Norfolk State to serve as head coach of one of the teams. He’s the most successful football coaches in America. Shortiy after I suggested that Larry Holmes should retire from boxing, the heavyweight champ signed with promoter Don King to meet someone named David Bey in late February or early March. in my opimon, Marcus Allen of the L. A. Raiders should be rated up there with the O. J. Simpsons, Jim Browns, and the John Riggins. Grambling coach Eddie Robinson says he had to drop two scholarships so he could have enough money to feed James Polk, his 6’11”, 314-pound defensive tackle. Free agent Lee Lacy is making requests that astound major league club owners. He places higher values on being assured of more playing time rather than receiving more money. Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Donnie Moore is putting the “bite” on owner Ted Turner for more money. The team’s most effective hurler in 1984 is seeking a three year contract worth $1.5 million. He was paid $200,000 last season. The Montreal Expos are seeking outfielder Chile Davis of the San Francisco Giants. They seem willing to give away anything but the franchise. ' . Did you know that CBS Network Radio will broadcast (major league baseball games next summer? The cost is $32 million, including plans to broadcast games nation i ally Saturdays duiring the regular season, beginning May 25. My guess is that Saint Augustine’s will win the CIAA Southern Division. The way I see it, Winston-Salem Will finish second arid J.C. Smith Johns Needs 12 Points To Set New Scoring Record By Phil Busher Special To The Post For any follower of basketball who has not seen a women’s college —game in the last six or seven years, you just won't believe your eyes. The women have developed their skills faster in a shorter peiod of time than almost any other sport in competi tive history. The caliber of players at Johnson C. Smith University today would have matched any Division I pro gram in the country five years ago. "More girls are seriously involved in competitive athletics in the junior and senior high schools than ever before," noted JSCb women’s coach Steve Joyner. “They arrive on campus much further developed than just a short time ago.” Certainly All-CIAA senior guard Odelia "Smokey” Johns is a case in point. The Danville, Va., native needed just 12 points to break Mar - sha Alexander's career record 1,188 points against Barber-Scotia Thurs Odelia "Smokey" Johns .Scoring phenom day night. Johns and Alexander, now the women’s assistant coach, were the first two JOSL1 women to join the exclusive 1,000 point career club at Smith Smokey does not score at the expense of the team Johns is averaging 19 3 points per game on 49 percent field goal shooting She leads the team in assists with 5 7 per game The Smith women are off to the best start in the school’s his tory at 8 1 "Odelia is just a super compe titor who contributes whatever is needed to win," acknowledged Joyner. "Her floor leadership, de fense and confidence make her one of the premiere guards in the CIAA." ~A lut uf the c led it gues iu eveiy one on the team.” remarked Johns "We have considerable talent in Cassey Howell and Caryl Hardin. Everyone on the team contributes to every win ” Smith's recent 60-57 win over pre viously undefeated Norfolk State should generate votes for a possible NCAA playoff bid at the end of the Cl A A Participates In Freedom Bowl Greensboro Mid-Eastern Athle tic Conference Commissioner Ken Free and Southwestern Athletic Conference Commission Dr. James Frank announced that the Freedom Bowl All-Star Classic organizers have extended invitations to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) to participate in the 1985 football contest scheduled for January 12 in Atlanta, Ga.
