— The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. recently named 6r. John ST Epps as its new top executive and administrator in charge of the Fra ternity’s International Office in Washington D.C. Dr. Epps, initially reared and educated in the New York Metropolitan area, came to the nation’s capitol from Southern Illinois University at Carboudale's School of Medicine, where he served as an administrator and Assistant Professor of Medical Education. He received his bachelor's, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees from Southern Illinois University. \ . Epps has held various offices and worked in many capacitiea^at the state, regional and national levels in professional associations and the fraternity. His biography is listed in “Who’s Who in the Midwest,” “Who’s Who Among Black Ameri cans,” and “Men of Achievement.” Epps is a Life Member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and has been actively involved for 20 years. He has authored several books for the organization and, in 1982, was chosen as National Omega Man of the Year. Additionally, he has de monstrated substantial community involvement and was selected as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America in 1982. Christmas City USA Has Attracted Over 250,000 Visitors Heritage USA - Christmas City USA has attracted over one quart er of a million visitors in the first three weeks. The official opening was Thanksgiving evening. Over 50,000 vehicle, including hundreds of buses, have driven through the five-mile Christmas City route. Each night thousands of visitors view the beautiful lights and displays, listen to the holiday music, and watch the live nativity scene presentations - all celebrating this special time of year. '. This Christmas season marks the third consecutive year that Heritage USA has been transformed into Christmas City USA. VThe growth of the event and the number of visit ors each years has been astound ing,” said Jim Swaim, General Manager of Heritage USA. In 1982 the attendance was over 84,000 people. Last year, 1983, the displays and lights vastly increased to ap proximately 500,000 lights with an equal number of visitors - one-half million. Although the total number not be obtained due to a shortage of imports, the number of lights has still doubled to over one million lights. New displays have been built and lights will continue to be added throughout the Christmas City presentation. To accommodate the increasing number of visitors to Christmas City USA the hours and dates have been extended this season. Christmas City USA at Heritage USA will be open through January 31, 1985 from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. nightly. There is no admission charge. “The reason for Christmas City , USA is simple,” Swaim said, ”it’s a celebration of the birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ.” City Office Closing Charlotte City government will be closed December 24 and 25 for Christmas and January 1 for New Year's Day. Because of the holiday schedule, garbage pickup will be provided Wednesday, December 26, for resi dences normally scheduled for Monday-Thursday pickup and on Thursday, December 27, for resi dences regularly scheduled for "tTlh‘H<lny-mi«y plikup. During the holiday week, there will be no curbside trash collected, but bagged leaves will be collect ed Friday, December 28. For the New Year’s holiday, only * those residences whose regular garbage pickup is Tuesday-Friday ‘ will change. Their pickup will be Wednesday-Friday Christmas trees will be collected from January 2-11. Trees should be placed on the curb by 7 a.m. Buses will operate on a Sunday ; schedule, Christmas and New ■ Year Days. : ; » : •i ! I Utility Bilk Will Change In January Raleigh - Beginning in January, customer bills received from vari ous utilities will show an amount identified as sales tax. In the area of electric service, this involves private utilities, coopera tives, and the 64-member cities of Electricities of N.C., Inc. which own their municipal electric systems. Taxes have always been included in customers’ utilities’ bills. Be cause of legislation enacted, by the 1964 N.C. General Assembly, the sales tax will now be broken out and shown separately as of January 1, 1965. -- Thia will allow customers who itemize sales taxes as a 3e5iicdon on their federal Income tax retums to also Include the Sales tajrfrom their electric Mils. The intent of the le gislation is to show customers what amount of sales tax Is included in their bills, not to increase their bills. A customer who has questions about the change should call or visit his city’s utilities office .for more information. . Electricities is a Joint municipal assistance agency serving the In terests of 64 of the 71 cities in North Carolina that own their municipal electric systems.
