Much Is Oven, Much Is By Audrey C. Utato Peat Staff Writer Assistant City Manager Don Steger is a man of many responsibilities and activities. Fairly new to Charlotte (he came hen in 1999 to work for the City), Steger very obviously be lieves io helping out. He is on the boards of the Urban League, the United Way, ', Bethlehem Center, the Downtown Rotary CMb, CONTACT Coiaweiing Ser vice, the Multiple Sclero *i* Society for Western North Carolina, and the Afro-American Cultural Center. “I don’t believe the old theory that people can pull themselves up by their bootstraps,” he declared. “They can’t if they don’t have any shoes. A lot of people have helped me; life has been good to me." he continued. Steger’s guid ing philosphy is “to whom has been given much is •SKDeetedL” in Charlotte, including the police and fire depart ments; operations, which Don Steger .'.Assistant city w— includes the divisions of sanitation, street mainte ^ nance, community im controJ; employment and training; parks and recre ation; neighborhood cen ten; tKTgency manage ment; and the MwjliP' \ um. .... as one who “get* turned on by doing.” Charlotte fills the bill for him in that because he couldn't up his mind. His studkw included pre-law, admini stration, biotogy.'MM planning, and psychology. He has a second degree from Gammon Tbeoiogkmi Seminary, and received his Ph D. in urban studies and urban administration and Panning from the Univer sity of South Florida, Tampa. ’ . Ihe Assistant City Man ager has been “pretty ac tive” in church life. He is presently working with Reeder Memorial and feels Us ministry is "an impor tant part of what I ought to be doing.” V ; W Stager and Us wife, Eliz abeth, have an 9 year old daughter, Lisa.
