Opinions At West Charlotte High
What Makes A “Good” Leader?
While not everyone assumes lead
ership roles and responsibilities,
every individual is a potential lead
er and may someday find him- or
herself hi circumstances that call
for leadership skills.
Since today’s young people will be
the leaders of tomorrow’s world, we
asked students at West Charlotte
High School, “What makes a good
. leader?” Their answers, while
varied, had some common core cha
racteristics like honesty, responsi
bility, and assertiveness.
MONIQUE PATTERSON, a so
phomore from Wynbrook Way, de
scribed a good leader this way:
“They should be able to get along
with other people, like to do things
for others, and be attentive to things.
They show they can do anything they
put their minds to. They’re de
pendable.”
ANTONIO NEELY, a Columbus
Circle resident and a senior, sug
gested that a leader is “a person who
is willing to take responsibility.” A
leader, according to Neely, is neu
tral, “can speak their piece, talk in
front of people, and not be afraid to
be forward with their feelings.”
R08ALIND HENDERSON, a
Vickery Drive senior, called a lead
er "a person who can express him
or herself and stick to what he says,
does not take sides, strives for
balance, pits out alternatives, and
lets you decide. A leader is friend
ly, but not so friendly that others run
over him. Leaders aren’t bossy.
They have the responsibility to
make sure everything goes right”
..PATRICIA SOULE, a twelfth
grader from Castleton Road, de
scribed a leader as “someone
who’s honest, who stands up for their
rights and other people’s, too. A

SAMANTHA ORLANDO, a senior
who lives on Dalecrest Drive, de
clared that a leader is “one who is
very understanding and caring. A
leader helps others learn. Leaders
are dependable and are there to
help. They’re friendly but they also
are managers. A leader is able to get
along with others and understand
others’ needs and feelings.”
CATHE DUNKERTON lives on
Marlbrook Drive and is in the
twelfth grade. According to her, a
leader is “dependable and respon
sible. Leaders show a liking for
others no matter where they are;
they are caring toward others no
matter what their appearance may
be.” She concluded with, “Leaders
are honest, trustworthy, not afraid
to express their opinions, very open,
and present a good aura about them
selves.”
