Mrs. Elisabeth Kooots .Distinguished educator Mrs. Koontz To Get Distinguished Woman Award % . Jr" , :*«» Elizabeth Duncan Koontz, a 1963 graduate of Livingstone College, was one of five to receive the Distinguished Women of North Caro lina Award from Governor Jim Martin Friday night. Upon graduation from Living stone, she earned her master’s degree in elementary education from Atlanta University. She has received over 30 honorary degrees in addition to many other awards. A teacher ip the North Carolina Public Schools from 1938 to 1968, she was chairman of the National Com mission on the Status of Women. Mrs. Koontz, assistant state su perintendent of Public Instruction from 1972 to 1982, was the first black to be elected president of the Na tional Education Association. In 1969, she was appointed by Presi dent Nixon as director of the U.S. Department of Labor, Women’s Bu reau. She was later named by President Carter to the National Advisory Committee for Women and chaired the North Carolina Interna tional Women’s Year Coordinating Committee. iMrs. Koontz is an advisory board member of the Institution for Edu cation and Research on Women and Work at Cornell University and is a member of the Selection Committee for the Rockefeller Public Services ~ Awards.— — —- —_ A proud and dedicated Living stonian, Mrs. Koontz recently chaired the National Alumni Task Force which successfully completed a fund raising campaign designed to assist with scholarship aid to students. She also assists with the an ext’ensiwf^cjampus beautification program. County Government ' Offices Wifl Be Closed * Monday Mecklenburg County government offices and agencies will be closed Monday, April 8, in observance of Easter Monday. This includes the Department of Social Services, the Health Depart ment, all branches of the Public Library, the tax offices, and the Register of Deeds Office. The Main Library, 310 N. Try on Street, will also be closed Easter Sunday. The Board of County Commission ers zoning hearing, normally held the second Monday of each month, will be held Tuesday, April 9, at 2 p.m. in the County Office Building. The County's three landfills - Harrisburg Road, York Road, and ' Holbrooks Road - will be closed both Sunday, April 7, and Monday, Aprils. , All County emergency services, including MEDIC, County Police, and the Mental Health Hospital, will continue on a normal, uninterrupt ed schedule. The County parks - McDowell, McAIpine Greenway, Latta Planta tion, Ramsey Creek, and Idlewild Road - will remain open on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.
