Church News Briefs ,.,/r • • . - J. »* > *. F • J Local Churches To Celebrate Easter Sunday With Sunrise Services By Teres* Shnmoni Managing Editor Once you've read about the events during the Passion Week, you can’t h<3p but realize that Jesus suffered greatly to grant us a new co venant. Following His death we were also granted a special “Comforter” in the form of the Holy Spirit. But what Jesus had to endure before He gave up the ghost and died, can bring tears to one’s eyes. • The soldiers scourged Jesus, which meant they beat Him, in flicting severe suffering and pain with a whip of leather; they spit upon Him and took a reed and hit Him on the head. They also gave Jesus something bitter to drink, a drink mixed with vinegar and gall. As an Old Testament prophet fore told, the soldiers did not break any bones In the body of Jesus. They did break the legs of the two who hung on the cross beside him. And the soldiers did pierce Jesus' side with a sword to make sure that He died before the Sabbath day arrived. St. Matthew states that after Jesus died on the cross graves were opened and many bodies of the saints which slept arose and came out of the graves. They then went into the holy city and appeared to many of the people. mere was also a great earth quake, the veil of the temple was torn from the top to the bottom... . then the fear of God was upon many, (St. Matthew 27). But it was too late. As prophe sized Jesus was already dead and His resurrection would take place in three days. Jesus appeared at least three other times after that third day. For example. He appeared eight days later to the ll apostles. He also appeared later to about 500 people on S hillside in Galilee. On the day we call Easter, it is recorded that Jesus appeered at least five times. Now that you know what hap pened almost 2,000 years ago, you may want to know what is being planned in honor of Jesus’ giving His life for us. ■ ' At New Emmanuel Congregation al Christian Church, 3546 Beatties Ford Rd., Easter services will begin at 6 a.m. with a Sunrise Service.
