BUI \ v-v.r. ■ w THE $1.98 RAP SESSION. A democracy is a country in which everyone has an equal right to feel superior to the other fellow! The 100 Club deserves praise for its efforts to assist athletics at Johnson C. Smith. They were first p1«r« in roasting Eddie McGirt and Kenny Powell and honoring basketball coach Bob Moore and Odelia Johns, the super eager who has earned positions on two All-American teams. According to Jet Magazine, there are 37 black million aires in professional sports, including 14 in major league baseball, 11 in the NBA, four in the NFL, two in the USFL and the six black boxers, who reached the magic figure in The New York Knicks are pulling out all stops to get into position to draft Pat Ewing. Pat is considered a franchise builder who would become one of the Big Apple’s biggest drawing cards. Money woes continue to plague the United States Football League. Reports from Birmingham, Ala., list the Stallions eight weeks behind on rental payments for . L^pon Field. Also, that the Los Angeles Express are playing to 8,000 fewer people per contest this year than they did a year ago. Did you know that Wilt Chamberlain scored 60 or more points in a single game 32 times during his fabulous career? The feat has been achieved in only 42 contests. The NBA is going to television with the lottery its going to hold for Patrick Ewing at halftime of the May 12 Playoff Contest. My guess is that the Big Guy will go to the New York Knicks. Heavyweight boxing champion Larry Holmes surprised no one when he announced that he’ll “fight somebody” in Las Vegas on May 20. He originally was scheduled to a $2.5 million contract to box light heavyweight champion Michael Spinks, but Spinks is saying he will not sign. Guess who will open the “NFL Monday Night Football” slate? Arch-rivals Washington Redskins and the Dallas Cowboys have drawn the assignment for September 9 in Dallas. Both teams are looking to improve on last year’s performance. Ken Singleton, one of the Baltimore Orioles’ most popular heroes, has joined Tony Kubek and Tommy Hutton as sportscasters for the Sports Network. Odds favor Carl Lewis when he tries to break Bob Beamon’s World Record of 29 feet, 2Vz inches in long jump. ABC will telecast the event at UCLA May 18. Delaware State is donating the proceeds from its annual Red and Blue Spring Football Game, slated for Saturday, April 27, to the Ethiopian Food Relief Rund. The Hornets will engage N.C. A&T in their season opener at Franklin Field Jp Philadelphia, Pa. Haze Moore and Fred White, who are among the best at staging golf tournaments, have scheduled the annual Walls Memorial AME Zion Church’s seventh annual Captain’s Choice meet for Saturday, April 27. It will be held at Revolution Park. Haze says entry forms are available at Walls Athletic Office, 2722 Bancroft St. They must be picked up no later than Monday, April 22. “We’re going to make this the best tournament we’ve had,” Moore said recently. The entry fee Is a mere $20 per person for adults and only $15 for individuals under 16. The Independent Order of Foresters is staging its annual tournament at Sunset Hills Golf Course Saturday morn ing, beginning at 8 o’clock. THOUGHT OF THE MOMENT - The issue of fan support is increasingly becoming a major concern of black colleges and universities. These schools pursue an out standing commitment to the communities they serve and the games are well played, yet these attributes have not had a direct impact on improving the attendance figures. It’s our responsibility as caring alumni, friends, and loyal supporters to do something about this! WBTV World Seniors invitational has reached another milestone. The annual visit of the Senior PGA Tour golfers at Quail Hollow Country Club here next September will be aired on ESPN for three days of two-hour telecasts. Baseball scouts are saying that Florida A&M’s Vincent Coleman could be an AH-Star in the majors. Coleman is currently playing Triple A Ball in the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization. Look for former Grambling wide receiver Trumaine Johnson to return to the USFL Arizona Wranglers. He’s about ready to end his lengthy holdout for a better contract. Credit Home Box Office (HBO) with making another coup. HBO has picked up the tab to televise the Marvin Hagler-Tommy Hearns fight which captured the public’s imagination as one of the great bouts of all times. It will be shown Monday night at 10 o’clock. Hagler, who has been denied his due recognition and reward to be placed among the all-time greats, made an interesting point before the Monday night fight. After getting what he thought was “bad decisions” in previous Las Vegas fights, Marvin told the press, with fists clenched, “This time, I brought my own judges - K and O!” I love itt My guess is that the $5 million each fighter received for the first bout will be small in comparison with the paychecks they will receive in the return match. Promoter Bob Arum predicts the take for the Monday night fight will top 125 million, a record high. The New York Mets, with the sensational Dwight Gooden pitching, drew the top television ratings for last Sunday, topping the New York Yankees, the Masters Golf Tournament and the ABC USFL game. With an 11.1 rating, the Mets’ share was a little over four times more viewers than the football game between the New Jersey Generals and the Portland Breakers. The continuing success of the National Basketball Association (NBA) has CBS and WTBS up in the air. CBS plans to televise 25 NBA Playoff games and WTBS will cover 20 prior to the championship Playoffs. The league set an attendance record this season of 10,506,355. During an Awards Banquet at West Charlotte's Recreation Center, located at 2400 Kendall Drive, Patrick Herron (c) receives trophy for “Best Ath lete" from the center's assistant director, Don Cureton. Kenneth Williams, far left, received the "Most Valuable Player” award. Advisory board chairman, D.C. (Champion, and Howard Hoyle, main contributor to the center (of Hoyle's Restaurant), observe.
