But this may also be a teed time of year for students to reflect back on the past year’s educational experience and recall what has been good. Fourth, fifth, and sixth graders at First Ward Elementary School were asked what they like best about school. Here’s what Charlotte’s children had to say. • LIN FISHER, of Lorraine Drive, is a fourth grader in Ms. Bishop’s class. To the question. “What do you like best about school?” Lin re plied, “Lunch and PE.” He has PE once a week. “My favorite sport is football,” he added. The fourth grader also likes Ms. StilweO’s science and language arts class. • STACEY WARREN is in Mr. Shaw’s sixth grade. A resident of Carmel Ridge Road, this is Stacey’s second year at First Ward. Read ing is her favorite school activity. “I enjoy reading. It’s fun because you can picture the things in your mind. Reading’s about my favorite sub ject.” She also likes Ms. Blakely’s science class. •TERRY KRAMER, a sixth grad er in Ms. Hudson's class, is in his third year at First Ward. Terry lives on Pensford Lane. His response to the question was initially, “I don’t know.” Then he added, “I guess having PE with the teacher, Ms. Merrill. Right now we’re working on softball. One time we did soccer. She teaches us different kinds of games.” Almost as an afterthought, Terry remarked, “I like science, and sometimes math-but not always.” A good student, Terry reported, “The last two times, I got Terry Kramer .A “PE” fan i • 1 ■ . Scophlan Springs .Music and PE straight A’s.” He'U be going to McClintock Junior High next year. • TAMARA “NICKIE” MAJOR lives on Seventh Street. She is in Ms. Coppage’s fifth grade. This is her second year at the school. Tamara’s a- • Patricia Ellis .....Learning favorite thing about school is “trips.” She especially liked going to Discovery Place. “We’re going to Raleigh on May 9,” she announced. “We’re going by train.” Tamara admitted this will be her first train trip. She also said she likes Jam boree. “It's like a fun day,” she explained. • PATRICIA ELLIS, in her third year at First Ward, lives on Luther Street. She is in Ms. Grainger’s sixth grade. Her response was, “I guess the learning. Social studies is my favorite subject.” She especially likes the projects the class does. “We’re working on the Middle Ages now, and like that the best,” she concluded. • SCOPHIAN SPRINGS, a student in Ms. Ganatasiou’s sixth grade, is a three-year veteran of First Ward. She lives on Davidson Street. Scophian likes PE, “because you get to play games and have fun. It exercises your muscles.” She also likes music with Ms. Brewer every Tuesday. CPCC Receives National Rankins Central Piedmont Community Col lege has been ranked in the top five among community colleges in the U.S. for teaching excellence in com munity colleges in the U.S. A team of university researchers chose CPCC based on a two-year study of teaching excellence in the nation’s 1,219 community colleges. The study was directed by Dr. John Rouche, professor and director of the community college leadership program at the University of Texas at Houston. “This is the highest kind of ac colade an institution which empha sizes teaching and learning can get,” said CPCC president Dr. Ri chard Hagemeyer. “It is a well deserved tribute to the dedicated faculty and staff who have made this national rerofni^yi jnmriM* “CPCC students repeitetfiy say complimentary things about the quality of instruction they re ceived here.
