Cora Hubbard Jumps Out Front In Spall ry By Jalyne Strong Peat Staff Writer Though abe is a first time contestant in the Post’s —annual “Churchworfcer of the Year" contest, Cora Hubbard is no babe in the woods when it comes to competition. Her first time out in this initial week of the contest, Hubbard has pulled ahead of everyone else to lead the small church category. A member of Chappell Memorial Baptist Church, Hubbard has sold sight subscriptions so far. That amount was a good enough start to give her a jump on the others in her division but let Hubbard teO it, that’s far from the best she can do. “I’m not pleased with this week," she relates. “I thank God that I did get the eight but I want to do better," Hubbard declares. “I’m out to win," she admits. “I am a winner,” she emphasizes. “I have CSirist in my heart and when you have Christ in your heart you are a winner!” As you can see, Hubbard doesn’t need a pep talk to ' Cora Hubbard .Doesn't need pep talk; get her on her way. That’s because, she confesses, her progress comes through “prayer.” Hubbard had previously assisted in past “Church woman” contests but this year she thought it would be nice to be the contest ant herself. “I wanted to do something for my church,” Hubbard explains. “I see the contest as a good way of helping the church-raise— money,” she mentions, referring to the g commis sion her church receives fo^each subscription she Unselfish in her ap proach to this competition, Hubbard also affirms, “I really believe I’m going to win because I want my pastor and his wife to have the vacation.” Her pastor is Rev. Wilson Mitchell. “And I could use a vaca tion myself,” she adds as an afterthought A member of Chappell for eight years, Hubbard gives much of herself to the church. She is president of the senior choir and sings on the choir. She is also on the board of new mem bers and is a missionary. And she proudly mentions that her husband. Rev. d; Maurice Hubbard, is the associate pastor of Chap pell Memorial Baptist. Because for • Jour years, three consecu tive, Caldwell’s Uluminat ing progress in the “Cburchwoman” contests has brought her front and center to the attention of Post readers. And this year, her fourth year, is, of course, no dif ferent. Few people will be sta-prised to see that Cald weU is, again, a front-run ner in the IMS “Church worker of the Year” con test. ?Vv' • ... . With the tally in for the first week of competition, CaldweU is leading the medium-sized churches with 23 subscription sales. She has, in fact, the high est total of aU contestants in every category. How does die do it? Well. Caldwell is repeatedly de scribed as Energetic, en thusiastic, a real go-getter, out-going and extremely concerned for bar church and pastor." Postively, these attributes have coif trlbuted to her conttnuota But let us take a look back to gain a little more insight (n 1900. Caldwell partici pated in the "Chureh woman" contest for the Mattie Caldwell .Sold 21 subscriptions first time. She wasn’t in volved again until MM but in that three year hiatus she must have picked up on a few winning tips. For as a contestant, she shot to the lead promptly and pretty much maintained it for the six weeks. At the wrap up of the ISM con test, Caldwell was wrapped in a mink coat she won as a finalist. Then in 1984, the pattern was repeated. Caldwell gained the lead early in the contest and rode that wave all the way through. Again, she was one of the three finalists and she bagged a *500 grocery gift certificate from Harris-Teeter. Now it is 1985, and it looks like Caldwell is fol lowing through on the same formula. She has taken the lead early, as before. It’s, yet to be seen whether she can sustain that advantage for the following five weeks. There’s stiff com petition out there. Yet Caldwell does have expert-. ence and an impressive track record. Dr. A. B. Sutton is pas tor of Ebenezer Baptist Church where Caldwell is a life-time member. She is a trustee, director of the Young Adult Missionary, program director for the Floral Club, a member of the" Pastor's Aide and co leader of Senior Mission ary Group No. 9.
