This weekend Antioch Baptist
Church will celebrate the 15th anni
versary of the Rev. and Mrs. Pres
ton Pendergrass as spiritual leaders
of the congregation. The celebra
tion begins with a fellowship gather
ing on Saturday. June 8. The Rev.
Leon Riddick and the choir of Mt.
Carmel Baptist Church will be
guests at an afternoon service on
Sunday, June 9, at 3:90.
The Rev. and Mrs. Pendergrass
and their four children came to
Antioch from Mt. Moriah Baptist
Church in Belmont, N.C. In the 18
years Rev. Pendergrass has paa
tored Antioch, the church has moved
to its present sanctuary at 232
Skyland Avenue, and the member
ship has growri from 300 to 500. He is
a preacher, teacher, lecturer and
leader, well learned and truly a man
of God.
Rev. Pendergrass holds the posi
tiocLof secretary of the Long Creek
Association. He has ministered five
churches, taught at two institutions
of higher education, and served in
the Army during World War II.
Ha earned his Bachelor of Arts
degree from Johnson C. Smith Uni
versity-In 1948, rwith honors. The
same year, he was ordained to
preach the Gospel, and. in 1951, he
earned his Master of Divinity de

sanctuary on Margaret Wallace
Road. The sanctuary will be a tra
ditional wooden Gothic structure,
cross-shaped, with the altar teeing
East. Ten stained glass windows will
, depict scenes from the life of Christ.

tember 2-8,1985 for the 105th Annual
Session of the National Baptist Con
vention U.S.A., Inc. to be head
quartered at the Atlanta Hilton
Hotel.
The Convention, headed by Dr. T.
J. Jemison, is one of the nation’s
largest black organizations with
some 6.8 million black baptists
