The College’s annual Commencement dmrciBt will be held on Saturday, June's, 1985 at Gethsemane AME Zion Church, 531 Campus Street. Approximately 140 Associate De grees and Diplomas will be pre sented to graduates in everthg, data proemsing, management, word . processing, secretarial science, and medical office administrative assistant programs. . A former star quarterback with the N.C. State Woifpack who went on to NFL fame, Gabriel is now vice preildmt of Charlotte Professional Sports, Inc., and is working with businessman George Shinn, Chair man of the Board of Rutledge Edu cation System, to brihg a pro fessional sports team to Charlotte Gabriel is also actively promoting the Rutledge College system and 1 g Gabriel la regarded m one of the greatest professional athletes ever to come out of North Carolina, the soo of a Wilmington railroad cook, be was the Rams’ number ,one draft . pick in the 1963 draft, and the NFL’s "Most Valuable Player” in 1971. He also had a brief career in Holly wood, appearing in the movie, “the Undefeated,” with John Wayne. He did TV football commentary for CBS and regional radio broadcasts .'Gabriel is currently delivering a sports commentary each morning on Charlotte radio station WE2C104. Rutledge College of Charlotte Is pert of the Rutledge Education System, founded by George Shinn. The college has an enrollment of 966 and is accredited by the Accredit ing Commission of the Association of Independent Colleges and Schools, a national accrediting body. The Charlotte campus was recently de signated aa a candidate for Ac creditation by the Southern Asso ciation of Colleges and Schools. £ At the Commencement ceremony, the college will recognise outstand ing scholarship and leadership through presentation of special aw*wh_• • Tax Returns Should Be fa The MbA Sn% I The majority of refund checks owed to North Carolina taxpayers as a result of proofed 1984 State income tax return should be in the mail by June 38, according to Secretary of Revenue Hsian A. *1 ■' 1 UWVJI. Although there were approximate ly 100,000 more rettams warranting refunds in 1918 than in the previous year, the Reysnue Department is also running ahead of schedule in processing returns on hand. The average refund check shows n slight increase over the previous year. To date, about 1.7 million refund checks have been issued for an amount close to 1370 million, averaging about 1234 per check. The Department has received 1.9 million that require refunds and that are tally paid or . possible that some refund checks will be delayed beyond Jane 30 dus to error in the return re quiring the Department to have some correspondence with the tax payer.
