Land Loss Prevention Project Receives $2,000 ine worm Carolina Association of Black Lawyers Land Lots Preven tion Project has recently received a grant from the Fund for Southern Communities in the amount of <2,000 I to support the Land Stewardship Pilot Training Program: This unique program will work with representatives of local church ! es to explore values towards land ownership, legal and technical as pects of land ownership and rights responsibilities regarding land own ership. The Rural Church Com mittee of the General Baptist State Convention with the Divinity School of Shaw University, a pre dominantly black, private college in Raleigh, North Carolina, will be working with the Project in carry ing out the goals of the pilot pro gram. The Project is a non-profit cor poration which seeks to continue to provide legal assistance to low income people who are threatened with land loss by referring them to private attorneys on a fixed nominal fee basis. The. Project, located at North Carolina Central University School of Law, Durham, N.C., has five successful components in its third year of operation: a lawyer referral system, a law school clinic and course, an attorney tralnii* program, a community education program and a legislative advo cacy component. Attorney Brenda Fprd McGhee, who directs the Project, evplajM what this grant means to the land owners in North Carolina. “This grant is so important because of the critical need for legal *—in the fight against land loss. We fo cus our work In the Piedmont and eastern North Carolina because the problem In those areas are more severe and lawyers are scarce,” she stated. The need for legal assistance in this battle is indeed crucial. North Carolina lost more farms - is,oo (14.1 percent drop) in the past five years - more than any other state. In the four years from 1978-1M8, all farms in North Carolina Irrrnsenl from 81,7*9 farms totalling 11 mill ion acre* to 72,799 farms totalling 10.3 million acres - a loss of 8,907 farms and 700,000 acres. The Fund for Southern Comm uni - ti« is a publicly supported alter native foundation established in 19U to provide grants to grass roots social change organizations working in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
