Mrs. Barbara IWalke^s
Barbara Walker is like
many other contestants in
this heated Church worker
of the Year contest. Her
momentum has picked up
and as sbe described, “I’ll
be going full blast these
last two weeks.”
Mrs.-Walker’s strategy
so far has been quiet and
low keyTBOt the ^Bsette
ment of participation has
surfaced. ‘Tm very ex
cited about being a con
testant I had never en
tered a contest and this is
certainly a challenge for
me. I’m thankful that
someone thought enough of
me to enter my name for
nomination.”
She was elected to run as
churchworker through a
session at H. O. Graham
Metropolitan Church,
located at 2896 Old Steele
Creek Rd., and pastorfed by
Rev. A. R. Hendricks.
She has found that not
only are church members
responding but so are
friends and family. “Many
people are helping me out
I usually tell them that I
am running for chwch
worker and that usually
does it. By people knowing
me they will usually buy
the Post. Heel that the Post
is both important and in

formative to our com
munity,” she continued.
In addition to aiding the
public as far as informa
_.tion is concerned, Mrs.
Walker also feels that she
is giving a financial hand to
the church. “My number
one reason for entering the
contest was to help my
church. Secondly, I had
never been involved in any
thing quite like this before
and I looked forward to the
challenge.”
Like one particular song
states, “No man is an
island,” Mrs. Walker is not
alone In her
a winner. She is aided by a
cast of committed commit
tee members including
Pamela Randolph, Charles
Williams, Anita Lewis,
Erwin springs, and Lattie
Chisholm.
' Her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Waddell Boyles, and
Kevin Walker, her son, and
a recent high school grad
uate, are also taking time
to give her aid.
As a member of H. O.
Graham Metropolitan
Presbyterian ChUrch, Mrs.
Walker is involved in the
Girl Scouts, is president of
the Gospel Choir, and
serves as an Elder of the
church.
Right now Mrs. Walker is
standing on faith and not on
what she sees. And as long
as there is hope there is
that possibility that she can
break through to the lead.
Her final statement, MI
hope that I win,” exempli

Minnie Patterson is
Macedonia Baptist’s con
testant in the small church
category of the Church
worker of Year contest.
She’s a first-time contes
tant and she got involved in
the contest purely by
chance. “My pastor, Rev.
L. J. Wallace, said,
‘There’s something 1 want
you to do,”’ recounts Pat
terson. ”1 said O.K. but I
didn’t know at the time it
was this contest,” she
laughs. 1 . *4
"He knew I’d do it," die
continues. Arid she admits,
her pastor knows her
pretty well since Patterson
has been a member of Ma
cedonia 26 years, only a
couple of months longer
than Rev. Wallace. Plus,
Patterson says, "I do work
all over the church.” So
Rev. Wallace more than
likely felt assured she
could handle one other ac
thrity.-igt*
“It feels good being in the
contest,” says Patterson.
“Though I’m not selling as
many subscriptions as 1
want.” Vet, for a contes
tant without a committee,
Patterson is holding her
own.
Her strategy is to call
people on the telephone and
once they commit to buy a
subscription her husband,
Woodrow, goes to pick up
the money “A lot of folks
say we’ve ?ot a ^ood thing
' ,*
going," Patterson smiles.
Her oldest daughter is also
~ helping out a little with
Then, Patterson has
picked up a few sales
based on a little luck. *‘A
few people have seen my
picture in the Post and
have called me to get a sub
scription,” she says glee
fully.
A mother of five, grand
mother to four and great
grandmother of one,
Patterson loves to stay *>'
busy. Her hobbies are/
“people and travel." She
explains, "I just like peo
ple. I like to do things for
people-the least fortunate,
I like to help the moat.
“And I love to travel. I’ve
taken short tripe to the
mountains, Atlanta, etc.
But my children are send
ing me on a trip to
Nassau soon,” tells Pat
terson. Well, in that case,
Patterson probably won’t
want to win the Church
worker grand prize trip,
right? “Oh, no!” she ex
claims, “I’ll just go two
times.”
Actually, Patterson dis
closes that she’d enjoy
winning anything in the
contest. "I just want to
win,” she affirms But if by
some small, tiny, itsy
bitsy chance Patterson
doesn’t get a prize this
year, she says she’s al
ready looking forward to
. competing again next year.
“I hope this is not the last
time I participate in the
contest.” confesses Patto
scti. “I believe the first
time you enter you feel
your way. But the second
time, you know what you're
doing.”
Pattferson is Macedonia
church secretary, chair
man of the Degqopp*/,
Board, she’s affiliated with
the gospel choir and is a
member of the women’s
Sunday School class.
\ Other small church cate
gory contestants are:
Sharon Gabriel, Moore’s
Sanctuary; Mildred Cald
well, New Bethlehem
Greater Bethel AME;
Lucille Johnson, Matthews
Murkland- and Cora Hub
hard, Chappell Memorial.
